Part-time Community Service Officer

City of Colton Police Department Hiring

The City of Colton Police Department is recruiting for several part-time Community Service Officers.

This is a continuous recruitment, however, may close at any time when sufficient applications are received. Interested and qualified candidates are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

Under general supervision, is assigned to perform non-sworn, non-emergency, uniformed, law enforcement and crime prevention duties; parking enforcement, to take and prepare a variety of reports; may assist with traffic control; and perform other related duties as assigned.

The Community Service Officer is a non-sworn position class responsible for law enforcement and crime prevention duties.

• Investigates a variety of crimes, traffic collisions or incidents; interviews parties, witnesses, and victims; prepares accurate written reports. Coordinates, determines, and schedules community-related safety programs; develops, schedules, and presents Crime Prevention programs; contacts and engages businesses regarding Crime Prevention activities; composes newsletters and social media content, public service announcements, news releases and engages with members of the media.
• Enters, modifies, updates, and retrieves computer data regarding stolen and recovered property, drivers' licenses, vehicle registration, warrants, and other information from state and federal law enforcement systems.
• Respond to non-emergency calls for service.
• Assist and provide information to motorists and the general public.
• Properly recover, maintain and process property and evidence.
• Enforces California Vehicle Codes, municipal codes, and tows and impounds vehicles when appropriate.
• Compile, tabulate and verify statistical data and reports.
• May perform animal service duties.
• Assist police officers with non-emergency duties; complete routine police reports; conduct non-hazardous investigations; collect evidence at crime scenes; appear in court as a witness.
• Interacts with the District Attorney Office; briefs and communicates cases, related materials, evidence, and special handling or delivery requests. Inspect police vehicles for proper operation and safety.
• Schedule routine vehicle maintenance and repair.
• Perform minor mechanical repairs and adjustments such as changing flat tires, light bulbs, emergency equipment, or police radio equipment.
• Obtain estimates and arrange for the service and repair by designated outside agencies or vendors for automotive repairs or installation of equipment.
• Maintain and monitor vehicle equipment and supplies.
• Jump start vehicles with inoperable batteries.
• Presents testimony or evidence in court when necessary.
• Safely search, process, monitor, escort and transport arrestees to hospitals and jail facilities in accordance with safe practices and Department policies. May perform police dispatch duties as assigned.
• Administer first aid as necessary.
• Maintain prompt and regular attendance.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Education:

A high school diploma or GED equivalent is required. AND

Experience:

One (1) year of experience in clerical, administrative and/or public contact experience.

• Possession of a valid California Class "C" driver's license issued by the California State Department of Motor Vehicles and good driving record.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain, a PC832 within one year from date of appointment.
• At least 18 years of age upon appointment.

Candidates who are being considered for hire, will go through a thorough background. Candidates who complete the background process successfully, will have a final interview with the Chief of Police. At that time, the Chief will make his hire selections.
