DEFINITION

Under the general supervision of the Public Works Supervisor, performs the full array of duties assigned including operating a variety of heavy equipment including truck and trailer, backhoes, large bulldozers, motor graders, large front-end loader, vactor truck or trailers while supporting and performing the duties of the Public Works Maintenance Worker series; demonstrates a full understanding of all applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties;

occasionally assists in the training of lower level Equipment Operator positions; performs a variety of other tasks in support of assigned area of responsibility.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Equipment Operator II is the journey level class and is responsible for operating the full range of heavy equipment. Typically, incumbents in this classification are responsible for operating truck and trailer, backhoes, large bulldozers, motor graders, large front-end loaders, vactor truck or trailer.

Note

Incumbents in this classification are subject to the Alcohol/Drug Testing requirements of the Department of Transportation.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May occasionally exercise technical and functional supervision over lower level maintenance staff.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

  • Operate heavy construction equipment such as truck and trailer, backhoes, large bulldozers, motor graders, large front-end loaders for a variety of construction operations involving streets, drainage systems, sidewalks, curbs and gutters.
  • Operate heavy equipment such as vacuum truck or trailer and rodding/jetting trucks.
  • Support and perform the duties outlined in the Public Works Maintenance Worker series.
  • Demonstrate a full understanding of applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties.
  • Operate construction and maintenance equipment such as dump trucks, skip loaders, rollers, graders, boom trucks, truck and trailers, crane truck, forklifts and various other equipment for a variety of maintenance and construction purposes.
  • Clean debris from ditches and other areas as necessary.
  • Perform a variety of other construction and maintenance tasks such as driving a truck, resurfacing roads and clearing brush from the right-of-way.
  • Identify equipment needs for assigned projects; pickup and deliver equipment from construction and maintenance sites as necessary.
  • Install street barricades and cones prior to the performance of street repair activities; direct and control traffic around work sites.
  • Respond to questions and concerns from the general public; provide information as is appropriate and resolve complaints.
  • Maintain prompt and regular attendance.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

A typical way of obtaining the required qualifications is to possess:

Education
: A high school diploma or equivalent is required.

AND

Experience
:
Two (2) years of experience operating heavy equipment or the performance of related work.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
:

  • Possession of a valid Class “A” California Driver’s License with Tanker Endorsement.

Knowledge of:

Street and other public works construction and maintenance equipment. The operation, care, and preventive maintenance techniques for heavy equipment. Provisions of the California Vehicle Code and other ordinances and rules involved in the safe automotive operation on City streets. Occupational hazards and standard safety practices. Practices, methods, and materials used in general construction, grounds maintenance, and general maintenance work.
