Job Description
The Materials Science Engineer – Materials & Process Expert will lead and support research, development, and production activities focused on advanced materials for defense and undersea applications. You will apply your expertise in chemicals, materials processes, and characterization to solve complex technical challenges and ensure high-performance materials solutions for DoD customers. This role involves working on cutting‑edge maritime defense technologies that safeguard naval fleets and ensure mission success.
We are seeking a candidate with experience in polyurethanes and epoxies.
Materials Science Engineer
Responsibilities- Lead materials selection, testing, and implementation, optimizing ceramics, polyurethanes, and epoxies used in acoustic maritime defense systems.
- Conduct root cause analysis and failure investigations for material and process issues.
- Perform laboratory and analytical testing; interpret and report data with scientific rigor.
- Collaborate with cross‑functional engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams to scale materials from concept to production.
- Support DoD program requirements, technical documentation, and secure project execution.
- Develop technical reports, proposals, and presentations for internal and customer stakeholders.
- Travel up to 15% for supplier engagement, testing activities, and program reviews.
- Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Materials Science Engineering.
- 9+ years of experience in potting materials/process and chemical/primers used to improve bonding to other metals, plastics, or other materials.
- Ability to perform root cause analysis, materials failure assessments, and data‑driven decision‑making.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare detailed technical documentation.
- Eligibility for a DoD Security Clearance.
Skills & Qualifications
- Experience supporting DoD, Navy, or defense‑related R&D programs.
- Familiarity with materials testing and characterization (SEM, EDS, XRD, DSC, etc.).
- Working knowledge of AS9100 or ISO 9001 quality standards.
- Experience with product life cycle systems.
- Experience in chemical process scale‑up or pilot‑scale materials development.
- Hands‑on experience with ceramic materials and composites in small and large molding practices.
- Strong analytical and research skills with an emphasis on applied materials, adhesives, and manufacturing processes.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project).
This position is based in an office environment, requiring in‑office presence five days a week with some flexibility as needed.
