JOB GOAL

The Crossing Guard is responsible for providing safe and orderly passage for students, staff, parents, and pedestrians at designated school crossings and intersections. The Crossing Guard monitors traffic and pedestrian activity, follows established safety procedures, and takes appropriate action to protect students and pedestrians before and after school.

This is a part-time position requiring the employee to report to an assigned post before and after school on scheduled school days and to remain at the assigned location for the duration of the scheduled crossing period.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Must be at least 18 years of age.
Must be a resident of East Chicago.
Must successfully complete all required pre-employment background checks and screenings, including:
Safe Hiring background check

Kid Traks/DCS-CPS background check and required child protection screening.
Must have no disqualifying criminal history or other record that would prevent employment in a school setting.
Must be physically capable of standing and walking for extended periods.
Must be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, and other inclement weather.
Must possess the ability to observe traffic and pedestrian conditions and respond appropriately to potential safety hazards.
Must possess a valid Indiana driver's license.
Must have reliable transportation to and from assigned work locations.
Must demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively and maintain a professional, courteous, and cooperative demeanor with students, staff, parents, motorists, and members of the public.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Crossing Guard shall:

Report promptly to the assigned crossing location and remain at the designated post for the entire scheduled crossing period.

Assist students, staff, parents, and pedestrians in safely crossing designated streets and intersections.

Control and direct pedestrian movement in accordance with established school and traffic safety procedures.

Monitor vehicular traffic and identify unsafe driving, traffic congestion, or other conditions that may pose a risk to students or pedestrians.

Use appropriate hand signals, traffic-control equipment, and other approved safety procedures when directing traffic and pedestrians.

Ensure students wait for safe crossing conditions before entering the roadway.

Maintain a visible presence at the assigned crossing and remain alert to surrounding conditions at all times.

Never leave an assigned post unattended during scheduled crossing periods unless properly relieved or authorized by a supervisor.

Monitor students for unsafe behavior while waiting to cross or while crossing the street.

Maintain a calm, professional, and respectful relationship with students, parents, staff, motorists, and pedestrians.

Report dangerous driving, traffic violations, suspicious activity, hazards, or other conditions that may threaten the safety or well-being of students to the appropriate supervisor or emergency personnel.

Immediately report accidents, injuries, emergencies, or other serious incidents to the appropriate emergency services and supervisor.

Assist emergency personnel when necessary and when it is safe to do so.

Report damaged, missing, or inadequate crossing signs, traffic-control devices, barriers, lighting, or other safety equipment.

Maintain awareness of weather and environmental conditions that may affect the safety of students and pedestrians.

Follow all School City of East Chicago safety procedures, security protocols, and directives from the Director of Security or designee.

Complete required incident, accident, safety, or other reports accurately and promptly.

Attend required orientation, safety training, and other training sessions designated by the district.

Maintain confidentiality regarding student information and matters observed while performing assigned duties.

Follow all applicable laws, district policies, procedures, and regulations governing student safety and school operations.

Cooperate with school administrators, security personnel, law enforcement, transportation personnel, and other district staff as necessary to maintain a safe school environment.

Perform other duties reasonably related to the position and assigned by the Director of Security or designee.
