REPORTS TO: Building Principal

LOCATION: HS

HOURS: approximately 8 hrs/day, and follows school calendar

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Monitors and supervises students as assigned.
  • Continuously monitors and evaluates student progress.
  • Assists students in all areas including academic, social-emotional, personal, hygiene or medical needs as assigned.
  • Assists instructional personnel with the presentation of learning materials and in the conduct of instructional exercises.
  • Provides remedial instruction as prescribed by lead teacher.
  • Assists in shaping of appropriate social behaviors.
  • Assists in the preparation of variety of instructional materials and learning aids geared to the instructional level and needs of children who are in special education.
  • Observes and monitors children with physical handicapping conditions and requests appropriate assistance for pupil experiencing physical distress.
  • Maintains or assists in maintaining an orderly, attractive and positive learning environment.
  • Participates in parent conferences, and pupil instruction, training and planning processes as assigned.
  • Participates as a member of classified staff and instructional team.
  • Demonstrates positive approaches and patience in working with students, associates, teachers and parents.
  • Helps support students with emotional and behavioral needs including safety supporting and deescalating student who may exhibit physically aggressive behaviors.
  • Assist students in a variety of settings in school and also during extracurricular activities or field trips as assigned.
  • Performs routine clerical tasks and operates a variety of educational and office related machines and equipment.
  • Utilizes a variety of appropriate instructional materials and procedures in the enhancement of a training and educational environment.
  • Respects authority and carries out Board Policy and procedures.
  • Communicates effectively in oral and written form while maintaining required confidentiality.
  • Helps students with basic medical attention and first aid.
  • Follows directions and guidelines provided by School Nurse.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Completion of at least two years of study at an institute of higher education; obtain an associate or higher degree, or meet a rigorous standard of quality; and can demonstrate through a formal state or local academic assessment the knowledge of and ability to assist in the instruction and health of students.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Two years of college coursework in education or health related field of study.
  • First aid and CPR certified.
  • Successful experience as Title I, Special Education, or general school para educator.
  • Ability to work with children of varied age groups, particularly those exhibiting specialized needs.
  • Knowledge of basic concepts of child growth and development and developmental behavior characteristics, particularly pertaining to pupils with special learning needs.
  • Knowledge of behavior management strategies and techniques relating to pupils experiencing significant behavioral challenges and impulse control difficulties.
  • Experience working in health related occupation.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Skill in critical thinking, problem analysis and resolution.
  • Ability to follow directions.
  • Ability to make mathematical calculations with speed and accuracy.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports, as required.
  • Compose correspondence in response to routine inquiries.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of a workday.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations.
  • Ability to maintain effective professional relationships with staff.
