Description:
The Safety and Training Coordinator is responsible for developing, implementing, and continuously improving Smart Lam North America's safety programs to ensure a safe and healthy workplace. This position partners with employees and leadership to promote a culture of safety, maintain regulatory compliance, reduce workplace risk, and support operational excellence. The Safety Coordinator leads training, audits, investigations, emergency preparedness activities, and compliance initiatives while serving as the facility's primary safety resource.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Monitor and manage safety programs related to combustible wood dust, machine guarding, hearing conservation, respiratory protection, confined space entry, fall protection, industrial ergonomics, lockout/tagout, hot work permits, and mobile equipment operations.
- Maintain OSHA 300 logs and related regulatory records. Analyze incident, near-miss, and safety performance data to identify trends and implement corrective actions.
- Coordinate emergency preparedness activities, including evacuation drills, fire response procedures, severe weather response, first aid readiness, and incident command support.
- Develop, deliver, and document safety training programs, including new hire orientation, annual refresher training, equipment certifications, and required OSHA compliance training.
- Manage contractor safety orientation, qualification, and compliance with site safety requirements.
- Promote a proactive safety culture through employee engagement, behavior-based observations, safety committees, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Facilitate regular safety meetings and support departmental safety action plans.
- Conduct routine facility safety inspections and audits to identify hazards, verify compliance, and ensure corrective actions are completed.
- Monitor and ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, company policies, applicable state requirements, and industry best practices.
- Partner with Operations, Maintenance, Human Resources, and Leadership teams to integrate safety into daily operations and business objectives.
- Lead incident and near-miss investigations using root cause analysis methodologies and implement corrective and preventive actions.
- Trainings employees on Forklift, overhead crane and lock-out, tag-out procedures, fire, and weather safety, making sure all required safety procedures are in place for all new employees, our equipment, building and products, are following OSHA regulations and standards.
Preferred Certifications:
- First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor
- OHST (Occupational Hygiene and Safety Technician)
- CHST (Construction Health and Safety Technician)
- CSP (Certified Safety Professional)
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in occupational health, safety, or a related scientific field, preferred. Another combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Five years of related experience.
- OSHA Knowledge required.
- Excellent knowledge of potentially hazardous materials or practices.
- Working knowledge in producing reports.
- Experience with writing policies and procedures for health and safety.
- Conducting data analysis and reporting statistics.
- Working knowledge of safety management information system
