Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) Position Summary

The Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) supports the Director of Nursing by helping direct licensed and non-licensed staff to ensure high-quality resident care, and serves as the acting DON in their absence. This role oversees occupational health and staff development functions, including infection control, employee injury management, worker health programs, and resident and employee safety. The ADON conducts surveillance, maintains records, evaluates incident reports, and provides data and recommendations to the Safety, Infection Control, and Quality Assessment/Assurance Committees.

Additionally, the ADON coordinates orientation, hands‑on training, competency evaluations, preceptorships, and in‑house education, promoting staff knowledge and skill development. Responsibilities also include supporting safety programs, participating in policy development, assisting with resident and family engagement, and providing nursing care when needed. The ADON upholds confidentiality standards, fosters a positive and inclusive workplace, ensures compliance with MDH regulations and the Residents’ Bill of Rights, and actively participates in continuous quality improvement initiatives.

Qualifications
  • Licensure and Knowledge
    Must be a Registered Nurse licensed in Minnesota with knowledge and interest in safety, infection prevention, disaster preparedness, and teaching staff.

  • Skills and Flexibility
    Must have basic computer skills (or willingness to learn), flexibility in working hours, ability to work independently, and perform essential job functions with or without accommodation.

  • Experience and Resilience
    Preferred experience in healthcare or skilled nursing; ability to manage multiple tasks, adapt to feedback, and maintain composure under pressure.

  • Interpersonal and Communication Abilities
    Strong emotional intelligence, personability to build trust, active listening skills, clear verbal and written English communication, and comfort working with diverse populations in a fast‑paced environment.
