We are seeking an experienced Controller – Real Estate Development to oversee the day‑to‑day accounting operations of designated real estate departments and entities. This role is hands‑on and operational, with direct responsibility for supervising accounting activities, approving payments and invoices, and ensuring accurate, timely financial reporting. The position plays a critical role in annual tax preparation, with a strong emphasis on partnership taxation and multi‑tier real estate structures.
The ideal candidate has deep experience in real estate accounting, is highly detail‑oriented, and has a proven track record with closing books and reporting on multiple partnerships and working with tax preparers on complex returns.
Key Responsibilities Daily Accounting Operations & Oversight- Supervise daily accounting activities, including general ledger, accounts payable, cash management, and intercompany transactions
- Review and approve invoices, payments, wires, and journal entries
- Ensure timely and accurate month‑end close, including balance sheet reconciliations
- Oversee entity‑level accounting for multiple real estate partnerships
- Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
- Develop, refine, and enforce accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
- Monitor long‑term and short‑term liabilities, including covenant compliance, and enhance lender reporting
- Support external audit and financial review processes
- Assist with preparation of annual budgets and forecasts
- Serve as a primary internal resource for partnership taxation
- Prepare and review tax work papers and supporting schedules
- Coordinate with tax preparers on multi‑tier partnership returns
- Track partner capital accounts, allocations, and distributions
- Directly manage and mentor accounting staff
- Partner with development, asset management, and acquisition teams
- Support senior leadership initiatives
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience in real estate
- Extensive experience with partnership taxation and multi‑tier structures
- Strong understanding of real estate accounting, including job costing, WIP, capitalization, and depreciation
- Advanced Excel proficiency (Pivot Tables, XLOOKUP, Power Query; subject to assessment)
- ERP and real estate accounting system experience
- Strong communication, judgment, and accountability
The ideal candidate is a detail‑oriented individual who will oversee the company’s financial records and account personnel. You will be responsible for maintaining all procedures and controls related to the company’s financial accounts.
- Maintain compliance with government agencies
- Act as the point of contact for external auditors
- Maintain internal books and finances Analyze financial transactions
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or 5 - 7 years of related experience
- Fluency in Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
- GAAP knowledge, CPA preferred
- Strong written, verbal and collaboration skills
