I am looking for a Controller to join a PE-backed, high-growth services company in the Mid-Atlantic region operating at $600M+ in annual revenue across 40+ locations nationwide.
Why this role?This is a build-it leadership opportunity at a company with serious momentum, growing nearly 30% in a flat market. The accounting function needs to be organized, scaled, and elevated, giving the right person genuine ownership from day one. The CFO has a strong track record of developing controllers into CFO roles, and the sponsor is a well-regarded blue-chip middle market PE firm with a large portfolio, creating visibility well beyond this single role.
For a technically strong operator who wants a true path to the top seat, this is a legitimate springboard.
- Lead and own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process across 40+ locations, ensuring timely and accurate GAAP-compliant financial statements
- Manage all GL activity including account reconciliations, journal entries, and accruals
- Establish and maintain strong internal controls over financial reporting, cash, and AP/AR
- Oversee accounting for customer deposits, deferred revenue, warranty reserves, and contractor/W-2 labor models
- Drive full ownership and optimization of a recently implemented ERP
- Lead integration of acquired business accounting teams onto the centralized platform
- Manage cash flow, bank reconciliations, and working capital; support lender reporting and covenant compliance
- Partner with Operations on job costing and margin reporting
- Lead, develop, and build out an accounting team of approximately 28, including three direct-report accounting managers
- Define roles, establish accountability, and build scalable processes to support continued geographic expansion
- Coordinate with external auditors, tax advisors, and relevant third parties
- Active CPA license required (non-negotiable)
- Public accounting background required;
Big 4 or large regional firm required - Minimum $500M-$1B+ company revenue experience
- Private equity-backed environment experience, including PE reporting cadence and addback methodology
- Multi-entity/multi-location consolidated financial reporting experience (20+ locations/entities minimum)
- Proven track record of scaling and building an accounting function, not simply maintaining one
- Seasoned controller with direct team leadership experience (20+ reports)
- Microsoft Dynamics 365 experience preferred; ERP implementation or optimization experience is a strong plus
- Local to the greater Columbia, MD area or willing to commute 3-4 days per week (no company-paid relocation)
