Essential Job Functions

This position is responsible for primary cashier duties in the court, including operating the cash register on a production basis. The incumbent will ring all monies received from customers in all case types, collect trial payments, and receive counter payments. The incumbent will assist with Civil and Landlord/Tenant cases and assist the public at the counter.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Utilize cash register to ring all monies due to the court for all case types: traffic, criminal, and civil filings, including trial payments, mail payments, and counter customer payments.
  • Account for all monies collected daily by balancing the register at the end of the day and process forward end‑of‑day/month reports to the proper departments.
  • Assist the public at the counter with general inquiries, fill in as an information clerk when needed, distribute forms, answer general routine questions regarding traffic, criminal, and civil cases, give directions to other departments and agencies, and transfer telephone calls to proper departments.
  • Prepare Landlord/Tenant filings for service and prepare the docket; accept filings through OFS.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education:

    High school diploma (or GED equivalent).
  • Experience:

    One (1) year of work experience, preferably in court operations or in the fields of criminal justice, parole and probation, legal or financial services.
  • Note:

    A Bachelor’s degree may substitute the required work experience.
  • A Paralegal/Associate’s degree or 60 college credits may substitute the required work experience.
  • A Paralegal Certificate may substitute the required work experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of general court proceedings, standard legal forms and documents used in the Judiciary, and basic English and arithmetic.
  • Skill in organization and workload management, customer service and handling problems, typing on a personal computer, and accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to use standard office and business equipment including personal computers, word processing and spreadsheet software, database software, copier, microfilm machine, register, scanner, fax machine, etc.; maintain alphabetical and numerical filing systems; communicate clearly and effectively with judges, the public, police agencies, attorneys, and other court officials; understand and abide by departmental rules, regulations, and procedures; exercise tact, diplomacy, and impartiality;

    follow procedures and protocols; use proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling; exercise independent judgment; multitask, adjust to situations quickly, set priorities, and handle pressure in a fast‑paced environment; complete assigned duties within reasonable time frame; account for all monies received via daily balancing of cash drawer; observe proper cash handling and deposit protocol; utilize District Court manuals to complete assignments and assist customers;

    stand or sit for prolonged periods; bend or stoop to file and retrieve documents in lower cabinet drawers; climb a ladder to retrieve or file documents and folders.
Physical Requirements

Light work. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.
