Starting at $38 hourly depending on education & experience

The Adjunct Faculty for the Foster Youth Program provides high-quality instruction and academic support to students participating in Howard Community College's Foster Youth Program, in partnership with Howard County Department of Social Services Ready by 21 Independent Living Program and Youth Transitional Services. The instructor creates an inclusive, supportive, and trauma-informed learning environment that promotes academic achievement, career readiness, and personal development for current and former foster youth.

The instructor delivers course content using evidence-based instructional practices while collaborating with program staff to support student persistence, engagement, and successful completion of educational and workforce pathways. Courses may include college success, workforce readiness, life skills, strength and career exploration, financial literacy, or discipline-specific academic instruction.

Role Responsibilities:
  • Deliver engaging, student-centered instruction in a variety of topics and settings.
  • Foster a welcoming, inclusive, and culturally responsive classroom environment that supports students from diverse backgrounds, including current and former foster youth.
  • Utilize trauma-informed and equity-minded teaching strategies to enhance student engagement and success.
  • Collaborate with program administrators to develop and maintain course materials, syllabi, assignments, and assessments consistent with college standards.
  • Evaluate student performance and provide timely feedback on tasks and projects.
  • Maintain accurate attendance, performance evaluation, and required instructional records in accordance with college policies.
  • Collaborate with Foster Youth Program staff, guest speakers, and student support personnel to identify and address student needs.
  • Refer students to appropriate campus and community resources, including tutoring, counseling, financial assistance, mentorship opportunities, and basic needs supports.
  • Participate in program meetings, faculty development activities, and required college training.
  • Support student retention and completion by maintaining regular communication with students and responding promptly to questions and concerns.
  • Remain current in subject matter expertise and instructional best practices.
  • Comply with Howard Community College policies, procedures, accreditation requirements, and FERPA regulations.
  • Perform other instructional and program-related duties as assigned.

Minimum

Education Required:

Bachelor's degree

Experience

Required:

  • Minimum of Bachelor's degree, Master's degree preferred
  • Minimum of two years of teaching, training, or related professional experience required
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and student success
  • Experience with online learning platforms and instructional technology preferred
  • Ability to work one Thursday evening and one Saturday each month
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to establish positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community partners.
  • Ability to create a supportive, respectful, and inclusive learning environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
