Position Summary

North Arrow, Inc. is seeking an experienced Fire Sprinkler Technician/Designer with an active NICET Level III or IV certification in Water-Based Systems Layout. This position is responsible for designing, coordinating, and supporting the installation of code-compliant fire sprinkler systems for commercial, industrial, institutional, and/or government]projects.

The ideal candidate combines strong technical design skills with practical field knowledge. This individual will work closely with project managers, field personnel, engineers, architects, contractors, authorities having jurisdiction, and clients to deliver accurate, constructible, and cost-effective fire protection solutions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop fire sprinkler system layouts and construction documents in accordance with applicable codes, standards, project specifications, and contract requirements.
  • Prepare hydraulic calculations, material takeoffs, equipment schedules, and supporting design documentation.
  • Design new systems and modifications to existing wet-pipe, dry-pipe, preaction, deluge, standpipe, and fire pump systems, as applicable.
  • Review architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and civil drawings for coordination requirements.
  • Coordinate sprinkler piping and equipment with other building systems and resolve design conflicts.
  • Perform field surveys, verify existing conditions, and translate field information into accurate design documents.
  • Prepare permit, fabrication, and installation drawings using AutoCAD, Revit, HydraCAD, AutoSPRINK, or similar design software.
  • Assemble and manage technical submittals, product data, calculations, and responses to review comments.
  • Communicate with authorities having jurisdiction, engineers, owners, general contractors, and other project stakeholders.
  • Provide technical guidance to designers, project managers, fabrication personnel, and field installation teams.
  • Review designs for code compliance, constructability, accuracy, and material efficiency.
  • Support project estimating, change-order preparation, procurement, fabrication, testing, and closeout activities as needed.
  • Participate in site visits, coordination meetings, inspections, and system acceptance activities.
  • Maintain complete project records and meet established schedules, budgets, and quality standards.
  • Mentor junior designers and assist with internal design standards and quality-control procedures.
Required Qualifications
  • Current NICET Level III or IV certification in Water-Based Systems Layout.
  • Five or more years of experience designing and/or installing fire sprinkler systems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of NFPA 13 and other applicable standards, which may include NFPA 14, 20, 24, and 25.
  • Working knowledge of applicable International Building Code, International Fire Code, local amendments, and authority-having-jurisdiction requirements.
  • Experience preparing hydraulic calculations and complete sprinkler design packages.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and fire protection design software such as HydraCAD or AutoSPRINK.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, contracts, and technical documents.
  • Strong understanding of sprinkler system components, installation practices, and construction sequencing.
  • Ability to perform accurate field surveys and identify practical solutions to existing-condition challenges.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities while meeting deadlines.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites as required.
  • Ability to pass any required background screening, drug testing, or site-access requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
  • NICET Level IV certification in Water-Based Systems Layout.
  • Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in fire protection engineering technology, engineering, construction management, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with Revit, Navisworks, BIM coordination, and three-dimensional clash detection.
