Natureof Work
The Area Engineer assigned to the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Unit manages and oversees the construction, inspection, operation, maintenance, and emergency response for ITS infrastructure and projects at assigned MDTA facilities. This position supervises project engineers, inspectors, and contractors to ensure projects are completed in accordance with contract requirements, plans, specifications, schedules, quality standards, and MDTA policies while maintaining the reliability and integration of critical transportation systems.
The ITS Area Engineer monitors project progress, supports the continuous operation of existing ITS hardware and software, oversees the implementation of new systems, and ensures rapid response to system failures within a 24/7 operational environment.
- Review proposed andactive construction projects for constructability, progress, quality, and compliance with contract requirements, documentingfindings and recommendations;
- Prepare extra workjustifications, responses to Requests for Information (RFIs), writtendirectives, and othercontract administrationdocumentation;
- Coordinate and overseeemergencyrepairs and restorationof ITS tominimize operational disruptions;
- Plan, schedule, and conduct pre-construction, progress, and project coordination meetings with contractors, consultants, utility companies, stakeholders, and federal, state,and local government agencies to facilitate project delivery and resolve issues;
- Resolve construction and contract disputes byarbitrating disagreementsbetween project engineers and contractors; and
- Provide technical documentation, supporting evidence, and testimony during contract negotiations, dispute resolution, and claims proceedings.
Employees in this position will report directly to the Deputy Director of Construction or other designated official. The current vacancy exists at the Francis Scott Key Bridge facility (FSK) in Baltimore, MD.

Possession of a bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited college or university.
ExperienceEight (8) years of experience in professional engineering, including one (1) year of supervisory or consultant management experience.
