Senior Data Scientist - AI/ML
Location:
Columbia, Maryland
X8 is seeking a highly skilled Data Scientist - AI/ML to support mission‑critical Defensive Cyber Operations (DCO) initiatives through the development and application of advanced analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence capabilities. This position will work closely with intelligence analysts, cyber operators, software developers, and mission stakeholders to transform complex datasets into actionable intelligence and operational insights. The ideal candidate combines expertise in data science, machine learning, statistical modeling, and cyber operations with the ability to develop scalable analytic solutions that directly support national security missions.
WhatYou’ll Be Doing
- Perform and apply statistical analysis, machine learning techniques, and advanced analytic methodologies to answer critical intelligence questions and support operational decision‑making.
- Develop reusable analytic products and data‑driven capabilities that provide measurable value to Intelligence Analysts and mission stakeholders.
- Apply machine learning techniques to identify and transform data features, uncover hidden patterns and trends, build and optimize classifiers, and develop automated anomaly detection systems.
- Evaluate statistical and machine‑learning models to determine the validity and effectiveness of analyses and operational outcomes.
- Collaborate with software developers to transition validated models into production environments and continuously improve model performance.
- Curate, collect, transform, integrate, and manage data from traditional and non‑traditional sources to support enterprise analytic initiatives.
- Develop and maintain processes and tools for monitoring model performance, data quality, and analytic accuracy.
- Partner with intelligence analysts and cyber operators to interpret analytic results and refine methodologies as mission requirements evolve.
- Communicate technical findings, recommendations, and insights to government customers, mission partners, and senior stakeholders.
- Document data science processes, machine‑learning models, datasets, and analytic activities while maintaining configuration management standards.
- Research emerging data science technologies, artificial intelligence capabilities, and industry best practices to improve mission effectiveness.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, Cybersecurity, or a related technical discipline and 8+ years of relevant experience; advanced degrees may be substituted for years of experience.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience supporting Defensive Cyber Operations (DCO) missions.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience applying machine learning techniques and statistical model evaluation methodologies.
- Experience developing and validating predictive, classification, clustering, anomaly detection, or other advanced analytic models.
- Strong understanding of statistical analysis, data mining, and machine learning principles.
- Experience working with structured and unstructured datasets from multiple data sources.
- Ability to communicate complex technical concepts and analytic findings to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Experience documenting analytic methodologies, models, and technical processes.
- Demonstrated proficiency with Python or R and SQL for data manipulation, analytics, and model development.
- Experience with Jupyter Notebooks and data science development environments.
- Familiarity with AWS cloud services and cloud‑based analytics platforms.
- Exposure to Cisco technologies, STIGs, IAVA processes, and cyber operations environments.
- Experience supporting Big Data Platform (BDP) environments and large‑scale data processing frameworks.
- Strong experience working within Linux (Ubuntu, CentOS, RHEL), Windows, and virtualized environments.
- Experience with network analysis tools and cyber‑related datasets.
- Ability to independently define technical approaches, solve complex problems, and deliver innovative analytic solutions.
- Familiarity with artificial intelligence frameworks, automation technologies, and operational cyber mission support.

- Salary Range:
Starting at $175,000+ (depending on education and experience) - Bonus potential
