Location
Western Region of Maryland – Garrett, Allegany, Washington, and Frederick counties.
Main PurposeTo provide supervision and guidance to youth residing in DJS facilities, fostering safer communities and equitable systems through daily support, behavioral management, and educational assistance.
Responsibilities- Escort and supervise youth during daily activities and movements.
- Observe individual and group behaviors to determine need for intervention or guidance.
- De‑escalate potentially harmful behaviors and, when required, physically restrain youth.
- Promote learning of alternative behaviors, encourage communication, and serve as a mentor.
- Assist youth in complying with schedules for classes, assignments, meals, sleep, and personal hygiene.
- Record behavior observations and prepare progress/incident reports for supervisors.
- Inspect residence areas for safety, security, and cleanliness.
- Assess inappropriate behaviors and recommend sanctions.
- Attend in‑service training on crisis prevention, suicide prevention, emergency medical treatments, and behavioral modification models.
- Assess emergency and crisis situations, make contacts, provide interim assistance until specialized help is available.
- Post night assignments in cottages or dormitories and accompany youth to community service activities.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Act as a member of the treatment team and provide input to the DJS Case Management Specialist.
- Help evaluate and recommend modifications to youth treatment plans.
- Facilitate daily behavioral modification meetings in the absence of the Case Management Specialist.
- High school diploma or equivalency certificate.
Preferred Qualifications
- Employment experience within the past 18 months.
- Associate’s Degree in a related field (e.g., Criminal Justice, Social or Behavioral Sciences).
- Completion of the Entrance Level Correctional Training Course and acquisition of the Maryland Correctional Training Commission certificate during the probationary period.
- Valid Maryland driver’s license if operating a motor vehicle.
- U.S. citizenship or legal resident status.
- Minimum age of 21 years.
- Thorough background check, including fingerprinting and drug testing.
- Oral, physical, and psychological examinations.
- Compliance with substance abuse testing requirements.
