Software Engineer, Backend Developer, Java Developer

• Design, develop, and implement complex software capabilities for computer-based systems
• Work closely with other engineers to create client-focused software solutions
• Use modern tools and technologies and stay current with software development trends
• Integrate AI coding agents into software engineering workflows
• Deliver multi-file features, perform codebase refactoring, and generate unit/integration tests using autonomous agents
• Guide AI agents across complex, multi-repository application architectures
• Audit agent-generated code for security, performance, and architectural alignment
• Work in a fast-paced small-business environment
• Perform additional duties as assigned

• Strong working knowledge and experience developing Java-based software capabilities
• Inquisitive nature, responsiveness, and excellent testing skills
• Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to work under pressure with multiple deadlines
• Experience integrating advanced AI agents, specifically Claude Code or Google's Antigravity / Gemini agentic workflows, into daily software engineering routines
• Experience using autonomous agents for multi-file feature implementations, complex codebase refactoring, and automated unit/integration test generation
• Ability to guide AI agents through complex, multi-repository architectures and audit agent-generated code for security, performance, and architectural alignment
• U.S. Citizenship required
• Must obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Security Clearance; not required on day one
• 5+ years of software engineering experience with modern Java frameworks and libraries, or 3 years of relevant experience with a Master's degree, or a high school diploma/equivalent with 9 years of relevant experience
• Bachelor's degree in a related field in one qualification pathway
• Experience designing enterprise APIs
• Experience with RESTful web services
• Experience with microservices architecture
• Experience with object-oriented programming paradigms
• Experience with the Agile software lifecycle
• Ability to learn quickly and work independently and in a team setting
• Experience with Linux
• Experience with configuration management tools such as Git, Nexus, and Maven
• Experience with cloud technologies such as AWS or Azure preferred
• Experience with distributed databases, No
  
  SQL databases, and full-text search engines such as Elasticsearch, MongoDB, or Solr preferred
• Scripting experience preferred
• Familiarity with Data Lakes or Warehouses preferred
• Understanding of Agile methodologies and standard software development tool suites such as JIRA, Confluence, and Git Hub Enterprise preferred
• Must be able to work in a hybrid environment, averaging 1–2 days per week at the Columbia, Maryland office
