Under the general direction of the Director of Athletics and the Men’s Basketball Head Coach, the Graduate Assistant for Men’s Basketball is responsible for recruiting duties, training student-athletes, and administrative jobs as assigned. Other duties may include assignments in one or more areas in athletics: game management, event planning, sports information, social media, and athletic fundraising. Instruction should include, but not limited to the rules, strategies, and techniques relating to practice and competition in this sport.
The Graduate Assistant will also support the mission and goals of the Athletic Department.
- Work with head coach and admissions on recruiting.
- Assist with the planning and development of the men’s basketball program.
- Train and coach during practice sessions.
- Run the program’s social media accounts.
- Film work and game preparation (scouting reports).
- Film work and evaluation (recruiting).
- Periodic game management.
- Work with our sports information director on social media; newsletters and interviews.
- Assist with our corporate sponsorship outreach.
- Other duties as assigned.

- Proven integrity, leadership, and a thorough knowledge of women's lacrosse are required.
- Candidates should possess a strong commitment and ability to motivate, teach, counsel, and recruit academically qualified student-athletes.
- Must have a valid U.S. driver’s license.
Minimum Requirements /Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree and proven successful coaching, with 2-3 years’ experience preferred, preferably at the collegiate level or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience are required.
- Full acceptance into one of Hood’s graduate programs is required.
- Knowledge of NCAA Division III rules and regulations is preferred.
- Must maintain a 3.00 cumulative GPA.
Proficient in MS Office tools (Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), e-mail, and the Internet. Ability to learn new applications quickly, including organization-wide information systems and department-specific software applications.
Language SkillsStrong oral and written communication skills. Ability to effectively provide information and positively respond to questions from both external and internal customers both in person and by phone. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Mathematical SkillsProficient with statistical and financial concepts. Must have the ability to apply those concepts to tracking, projections, goal setting, and interpreting reports. Must be able to draw conclusions from reports and make cost-effective decisions regarding programs.
Reasoning AbilityAbility to solve practical problems and deal with several concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to work independently and as a member of a group in developing and executing project plans. Ability to work in the theoretical arena and apply logic as appropriate.
CompensationThe compensation for Athletic Graduate Assistants consists of a $3,000 annual stipend, a tuition waiver for up to 18 credits per year, campus housing, and a meal plan. This temporary position is not benefits-eligible except for paid Maryland sick leave. Learn more about Hood College .
