Emergency Response Technician

State Highway Administration’s Office of Transportation Mobility and Operations (CHART) is recruiting for an Emergency Response Technician position statewide. This entry‑level role supports emergency response operations within the CHART Program.

Nature of Work

Emergency Response Technicians (ERT) manage incident and traffic congestion, provide guidance to Emergency Traffic Patrol operators, conduct traffic control at incident scenes, assist disabled motorists, and deliver real‑time traffic information to the Statewide Operations Center (SOC) and Traffic Operations Centers (TOC). ERTs may operate special towing equipment and are required to respond to and remove disabled vehicles or other obstructions on SHA roadways, restoring regular traffic flow under supervision.

They maintain patrol routes and respond to routine incidents, communicating continuously with SOC and TOC via in‑vehicle computers and radios.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school graduation or equivalency certificate.
  • At least one year of experience performing emergency highway operations, including relocating or repairing disabled vehicles, coordinating with fire, law enforcement, EMS, and tow operators at crash scenes.
  • Equivalent U.S. Armed Forces military service may substitute civilian experience.
  • Valid Maryland driver’s license.
Special Requirements
  • Complete agency training and certification programs to qualify for permanent status.
  • Operational duties with commercial motor vehicles require a Class C Maryland driver’s license; during probation, a Class A CDL and US DOT Medical Card (or MVA waiver) are required, depending on equipment operated.
  • Probationary employees must acquire light‑duty tow truck operator certification.
