The Prince George's County Department of Public Works & Transportation (DPW&T) is currently seeking a highly qualified applicant to fill a CDL Operator II position (Equipment Operator 2A) grade A15 in the Office of Highway Maintenance.

About the Position

This position is responsible for the safe and efficient advanced skilled operation of assigned complex light to heavy construction equipment in connection with road construction and highway maintenance tasks. Incumbents are required to train and be proficient on all pieces of required equipment. This work involves exposure to hazards, risks, or discomforts typical of working with or around machinery with exposed moving parts, irritant chemicals, fumes or airborne particles.

Work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions with exposure to the elements requiring intermittent standing, walking, stooping, climbing. Incumbents must be physically able to repetitively lift and carry at least 50 lbs. regularly. Incumbents must wear and maintain uniform and/or safety equipment such as hard hats, steel-toed shoes, safety glasses, and gloves. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the incumbent's supervisor based on the position assigned.

Work is performed under general supervision and may be staffed in the Office of Highway Maintenance (OHM). This position requires a Commercial Driver’s License-A/B (restricted or unrestricted) and DOT card at all times. All incumbents must possess the required licensure to operate light to heavy equipment/vehicles per DOT/FMCSA.

About The Agency

The Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) is responsible for nearly 2,000 miles of County-maintained roadways that range from rural to urban classifications. The transportation infrastructure includes 900 bridges, as well as shoulders, sidewalks, curbs/gutters, stormwater management facilities, driveway aprons and nearly 3,000 acres of grassy area -- all of which are maintained by staff of the Department. DPW&T’s workforce keeps the County’s various services moving by performing a myriad of activities which include removing snow and ice from County-maintained roadways, upgrading traffic signals, installing streetlights, clearing fallen trees, unclogging drainage inlets and maintaining stormwater management facilities, as well as performing roadway repairs ranging from potholes and sidewalk trip hazards to bridge repairs and resurfacing projects and more.

  • Operates all vehicles and/or equipment designated as within the Equipment Operator II category by the Office of Highway Maintenance which are used on construction and/or maintenance work projects. These include grad all, backhoe, tractor and trailer (lowboy), dozer, mobile concrete mixer, belt loader, tree truck, motor grader, rubber-tired loader (2 cy. or larger), track loader (2 cy. or larger), vac-all, street paver (movement and operation), small loader (2.5 cy.

    or larger) and 12-ton vibratory roller.

  • Operates single axle dump truck, tandem wheel dump truck, 5-ton roller, leaf vacuum, tractor/mower (sickle bar, rotary, flail, radial arm, batwing), asphalt distributor hose, asphalt distributor truck, bucket truck, chipper, loader, radial arm mower, rubber tire ,loader (less than 2 cy.), skid loader, street flusher/sweeper, street paver (operation only), stump cutter, root pruner and small loader(2.5cy. or less)

  • Performs unskilled tasks such as beautification projects, litter and trash removal, and operate equipment with spreader and snowplows for snow and ice removal.

  • Maintains vehicles/equipment in good operating condition, including performing interior/exterior cleaning duties.
