Overview

Building Consultants perform an array of services for the purpose of helping our clients resolve claims and legal disputes. Services include insurance claims analysis, Rough Order of Magnitude estimating, comparative estimates, cost analysis, evaluation of contractor bids, construction and repair cost estimating, repair scope review and analysis, cost monitoring, review of change orders and repair invoicing, appraisal services, and construction scheduling.

The role requires a strong background and understanding of technical aspects for both commercial and residential building envelope systems, including foundation, cladding, roofing, building codes, ADA guidelines, construction document preparation and repair cost preparation and analysis. Assignments will include site evaluations, assessment of damages, development of repair scopes and costs, analysis of contractor bid documents, and oral and written reports. The candidate may provide expert testimony, gather photographic evidence, conduct investigations, attend and oversee field‑testing with engineering staff.

Job Functions
  • Communicate complex construction information clearly to clients, both verbally and in writing.
  • Establish repair scopes and engage professional engineers to develop repair protocols and designs.
  • Analyze contractor scope and bid documents for accuracy and efficiency.
  • Perform forensic assignments within civil/structural engineering and building sciences based on scope and budget.
  • Use computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite and estimating software such as RS Means and Xactimate.
Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience as a commercial or residential construction estimator.
  • Insurance claims adjusting experience is a plus.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or Architecture is a plus but not required.
  • General Contractor’s license and practical construction experience in residential and commercial construction is strongly preferred.
  • May serve as team leader or project manager; may supervise associate team members.
  • Monitor and document progress during construction or rebuild as required by client.
  • Build and maintain mutually beneficial client relationships.
  • Travel to remote destinations to handle catastrophe events as required.
Ideal Candidate Profile – Building Consultant
  • Experience:
    • 5+ years as a construction estimator (residential and/or commercial).
    • Hands‑on field experience with building envelope systems (foundation, roofing, cladding).
    • Experience in insurance claims analysis or supporting legal disputes is a strong asset.
  • Technical Knowledge:
    • Deep understanding of construction methods, building codes, and ADA guidelines.
    • Skilled in estimating tools such as RS Means and Xactimate.
    • Able to analyze contractor bids, repair scopes, and cost documents accurately.
  • Licenses & Education (Preferred):
    • General Contractor’s license.
    • Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or Architecture.
  • Soft Skills & Capabilities:
    • Strong written and verbal communication.
    • Able to write detailed reports and present expert opinions.
    • Capable of working independently and managing projects or junior staff.
    • Comfortable interacting with clients and maintaining professional relationships.
  • Other Requirements:
    • Willing to travel for site visits, including catastrophe zones if needed.
    • Comfortable performing site inspections, taking photos, and documenting findings.
