Job Description Summary
The purpose of this job is to inspect construction methods of utility, transportation, and other engineering projects. Administers contracts and construction plans for engineering improvement and rehabilitation projects. Ensures projects conform to specifications, construction methods, and regulations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities - The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description
- Inspects methods and materials used by contractors, ensuring conformity with project designs, plans, regulations, policies, and specifications.
- Administers contracts and construction plans for engineering improvement and rehabilitation projects.
- Enters and maintains data, including pay estimates, field reports, and as-built drawings.
- Communicates with the public concerning neighborhood construction projects.
- Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- No supervisory authority. Work may require providing guidance and training to others.
- Interactions may result in decisions regarding implementation of policies. Contact may involve supporting controversial positions, negotiating sensitive issues, or delivering important presentations. Contacts may involve stressful, negative interactions with the public, requiring high levels of tact and the ability to respond to aggressive interpersonal interactions.
- Interactions have limited impact on the organization in terms of time, money, or public/employee relations.
- Position has limited fiscal responsibility.
- May assist in the collection of data in support of recommendations for departmental budget allocations. May monitor division or program/promotional-level budgets and expenditures.
Education and Experience
- Associate's Degree or 2 years of college in Civil Technologies, Construction Management, Engineering, Drafting, or related field.
- 3-5 years of related experience.
- Valid driver's license.
- MoDOT Concrete Technician - Concrete Field within six months of hire.
Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:
- Construction standards, inspection methods, materials, tools, and equipment of building trades.
- Applicable standards and regulations pertaining to projects.
- Basic arithmetic and computational operations.
- Principles, practices, and methods of civil engineering, including land surveying and mapping.
- Typing and/or data entry with minimal errors.
- Communicating verbally and in writing to meet the audience's needs.
- Maintaining accurate technical records and creating project reports.
- Recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.
- Exercise independent judgment.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Identify and distinguish colors.
- Work from blueprints, plans, and sketches.
- Use hand tools.
- Provide high levels of effective customer service.
- Regularly use a computer, software, phone, and related office equipment.
- Focus on tasks.
