Department Chair – Special Education
This position will serve as the liaison between the content department at the district level and building level. Additionally, this person will be responsible for coordination, articulation and implementation of effective curriculum and instructional strategies for special educators at their building. They will work collaboratively with their administrators, curriculum coordinators, district level support coordinators and other district instructional mentors to support quality curriculum implementation and instruction through providing professional development, resources, and support.

Responsibilities and Duties:
- Serves as an exemplary instructional leader.
- Serves as a liaison between the Special Services Department at the district level and the Special Services Department at the building level.
- Shares received information with the rest of the team in a timely manner.
- Demonstrates positive leadership ability.
- Demonstrates appropriate interpersonal relationships with students, families, and faculty.
- Assigns case managers.
- Attends IEP meetings for high profile and/or sensitive cases.
- Identifies needed courses or revision to courses.
- Schedules students in conjunction with guidance counselors.
- Arranges the testing schedule and accommodations for state and district-wide assessment programs.
- Monitors team's deadlines monthly for IEPs and evaluations and sends updates/reminders.
- Monitors team's implementation of IEPs and works with the team on changing schedules as needed.
- Monitors grades for IEP students within their building.
- Observes and meets with teachers/administrators regarding instructional efficacy and techniques.
- Identifies areas of need for in-service and coordinates with district personnel.
- Plans and runs regular department meetings.
- Collaborate with coordinators, mentors and teachers regarding program design and student achievement at the building and student level.
- Assist with student level analysis of appropriate goals, services and instructional practices relative to the student's skill deficits identified through the evaluation.
- Provide on-going support to teachers with curriculum, instruction, and student learning needs.
- Regular communication with building Admin regarding building needs/updates and aids in the achievement of school improvement goals.
- Assists building teams with the problem-solving process.
- Assists the principal in the selection, support, and evaluation of special education personnel.
- Plan and provide professional development around instructional supports and interventions at the building level.
- Orients and supervises the mentoring process for new special education staff in your building.
- Manages para schedules for the building or assigns another team member to manage.
- Coordinates and assists with completion of evaluations for paraprofessional staff (two times a year).
- All other duties assigned by the building administration.
- Adhere to and understand Board policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
This position includes a yearly stipend and extra contract days.
Performs other duties as necessary to support the mission and vision of Columbia Public School District.

Qualifications:
Minimum:
Missouri teaching certificate in special education; 5 years experience instructing students with disabilities.
Ideal candidate will have a professional and friendly demeanor with a demonstrated ability to work well with a variety of individuals in a fast-paced environment.
