Purpose:

This position is responsible for vocal music classroom instruction and training at the middle school level. This includes the development of students' vocal skills, teaching music theory, fostering a love for singing, and building confidence through performance.

Essential

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Plan, organize, and implement a vocal music curriculum that includes music theory, vocal techniques, ear training, and performance skills, aligned with state and national standards.
  • Lead individual and group vocal instruction, helping students to develop their voices, understand pitch and harmony, and learn to read music.
  • Direct choral ensembles and prepare students for concerts, assemblies, and community performances.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive classroom culture that encourages self-expression, teamwork, and a passion for music.
  • Provide constructive feedback on students' vocal skills and musical growth; assess progress through performances, assignments, and participation.
  • Organize and manage classroom instruments, sheet music, and other materials; ensure a safe and engaging learning environment.
  • Encourage students to participate in extracurricular music opportunities, such as choir competitions, festivals, and workshops.
  • Collaborate with other teachers, music faculty, and school administration to support interdisciplinary projects and school-wide events.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians regarding student progress, achievements, and areas for improvement.
  • Stay informed on trends in music education and explore new techniques to engage students in the vocal music program.
  • Maintain accurate records of student performance, attendance, and behavior; communicate regularly with parents/guardians about student progress.
  • Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated both individually and collaboratively.
  • Prepares for assigned classes and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisor.
  • Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities, faculty meetings, and school events as required.
  • Collaborates with administrators, colleagues, and parents in a positive and productive manner.
  • Strives to implement by instruction and action, the district's philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
  • Maintains accurate and complete records as required by law, District policy, and administrative regulation.
  • Assists the administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student life and conduct and develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure while maintaining order in the classroom in a fair and appropriate manner.
  • Makes provisions for being available to students and parents for education related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
  • Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for teacher aide(s) and/or volunteer(s) where applicable.
  • Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.
  • Perform other duties as necessary to support the mission and vision of Columbia Public School District.
