This position is for an EL teacher who will design and implement language instruction and intervention for students who are identified as English Learners (EL). The EL teacher will provide support to EL students in their classrooms and in the content areas. The EL teacher will be expected to develop individualized educational plans for each EL student and develop and deliver group and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines within all content areas.
The EL teacher will work collaboratively with classroom teachers in a capacity that includes, but is not limited to, joining professional learning teams, helping differentiate instruction and assessment of EL students, and providing on-going support to classroom teachers as they implement EL strategies. The EL teacher will administer the annual English proficiency test and will be responsible for administering the EL screening test to students who are new to the school.
The EL teacher must maintain all state and district required documentation on EL students and will serve as a liaison between the school, the classroom teachers, the parents/guardians of EL students, the district EL office, and district interpreters. This position may require travel among schools. EL teachers are district teachers who are assigned to buildings to meet the needs of EL students;
therefore, building placement may change from year-to-year. EL teachers placed at Douglass High School may teach EL content and enrichment classes, in addition to English Language Development (ELD) classes.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties
- Serves as lead teacher, co-teacher, and intervention teacher for EL students in language development classes and all other content areas.
- Serves as liaison among the school, classroom teachers, parents/guardians, students, district personnel, and community organizations that support EL students and families.
- Secures language interpreters for parent meetings and school events, as needed.
- Administers annual English Language Proficiency (ELP) assessment to all EL students on caseload and administers EL screening test to students who are new to the school (elementary only). Maintains proper testing protocol regarding these tests.
- Maintains accurate records on EL students regarding progress monitoring, language acquisition, reclassification, and all other aspects required for EL students.
- Follows all administrative directives and federal, state, and district guidelines and policies regarding EL students and collaboration with their parents/guardians.
- Works with classroom and content teachers to differentiate instruction, assignments, and assessments and accurately assign grades to the work of EL students in their classes.
- Provides professional development and coaching to classroom and content area teachers in assigned building(s) as needed and to the extent possible.
- Attends professional development sessions for EL teachers and staff.
- Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated both individually and collaboratively.
- Plans and implements a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of all students using data-driven decision-making.
- Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of all students.
- Prepares for assigned classes and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisor.
- Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
- Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and, in harmony with the goals, establishes and communicates clear objectives to students for all lessons and units.
