Position: Orientation and Mobility Specialist (O&M) - Kansas City, MO

Job Description

Make a difference in the lives of students as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist, supporting learners from elementary through high school throughout a dynamic district near Kansas City, MO. This full-time, onsite contract spans the academic year from August 24th through May 28th, with the flexibility to consider alternative schedules for the right candidate. You will travel within the district to provide vital services, empowering students to live more independently and confidently as they navigate their world.

What We’re Looking For:

  • National certification (ACVREP) as a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) is required
  • Experience teaching individuals with visual impairments how to travel safely and independently
  • Skills in orientation and mobility assessments, lesson planning, and progress monitoring
  • Ability to work directly with students who are blind or losing their sight
  • Comfort teaching use of canes, guide dogs, Braille basics, and independent living skills
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills

Responsibilities:

  • Provide orientation and mobility evaluations and ongoing instruction to students across multiple grade levels
  • Teach a range of skills, including navigation in diverse environments, using mobility aids, travel safety, daily living tasks (e.g., grocery shopping, money management), and reading Braille
  • Collaborate with educators, families, and district staff to develop individualized plans and adjust strategies
  • Maintain accurate documentation of student progress and services
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and orientation provided by the district
