Position Summary

This position is responsible for the complete management of all assigned projects, including defining client expectations, pricing and negotiating contracts, performing engineering services, ensuring project quality, identifying and managing resources, and meeting schedules and profitability goals. May participate in developing and maintaining client relationships and marketing company services. The role may be part of teams managed by other project managers.

Focus Area

Focus in transportation projects. Project work will include roads, highways, interchanges, stormwater conveyance and related work.

Responsibilities
  • Executes planning for projects, including development of the project scope, task organization, estimates of effort and other required resources, and schedules; creates estimates of cost and budget for the project.
  • Executes internal project setup procedures in accordance with the company’s policies.
  • Directs, manages and participates in the production of project deliverables including preliminary studies, plans and cost estimates, design surveys, designs and plan production, project status/review meetings, and contract document development and production.
  • May participate in the monthly project accounting process, including review of time and expense charges to projects, invoicing, and management of accounts receivable (A/R) and work-in-process (WIP) per company policy.
  • Reviews and assesses the progress and financial performance of assigned projects; coordinates and implements resource changes to optimize efficiency and profitability.
  • Communicates openly with clients during the project to address issues and documents progress; conducts progress reviews and meetings.
  • Conducts project closeout, including contract closeout and internal evaluation of project performance relative to budget.
  • Applies the company client service model to all client interactions.
  • Fosters a culture of discipline, meeting goals and deadlines; completes required administrative tasks (e.g., timesheets, invoicing, reports).
  • Stays current with engineering trends and participates in professional organizations and licensure as required.
  • Implements divisional and company standards and processes (e.g., file management, resource management, project planning).
  • Encourages open communication among project team members.
  • May work with a higher-level PM in project management.
  • Assists with developing and pricing contracts for client work.
  • Generally manages small projects or contributes to larger projects.
  • Refers contacts to CSMs and other senior managers; assists in resolving client issues with involvement from senior managers.
  • May assist with accounts receivable and invoicing.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in civil, structural, mechanical/electrical or architectural engineering as appropriate, or equivalent in combined education and experience.

Experience

8+ years of experience in civil engineering projects with increasing responsibility and P.E. licensure required.

Travel Expectations

Must be able to travel 10%+ of the year. Regular travel between home base, Topeka, client locations, and trade shows. Valid driver’s license with a good driving record required.
