Summary

The Summer Internship is a unique opportunity Academy Bank provides for an individual to experience the inner workings of a National Bank while completing a college degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, Data Science or related discipline. Successful candidates are self‑motivated, love to learn, and thrive in a professional environment. They will complete work within the assigned department, receive formal professional training on topics like personal brand, professional communications, mastering interviewing skills, and more.

Summer Interns also will solve real‑world problems by completing a research project that focuses on a business problem, culminating in a presentation to the bank’s senior officers. Summer Interns will be evaluated for future full‑time employment after graduation at the bank’s Kansas City headquarters.

General
  • Term of Internship: 8 weeks starting the first week of June and ending the last week of July, with potential for an additional two to three weeks during winter break if needed and approved by the eligible department
  • Full‑time, 32‑hour work week
  • Monday through Thursday schedule (9:00 to 5:00 or 8:30 to 4:30), excluding the Juneteenth and Independence Day paid holidays
  • $16 per hour
  • All interns will perform real work in the assigned department, research and present on a real‑work issue facing the banking industry and participate in a professionalism series that focuses on skills necessary to succeed in a professional environment, such as communication, etiquette, personal branding, and interviewing skills.
Department Assignments
  • Credit – The Commercial Banking team makes a huge impact by lending to businesses that develop and revitalize our communities. The Credit department is charged with assessing the credit worthiness of prospective and current commercial clients. They ensure that the bank follows a credit policy while working closely with commercial bankers to meet the financial needs of the businesses in our communities.

    Credit associates evaluate financial statements, credit reports, tax returns, and other business records with close attention to detail. They are great communicators with the desire to work collaboratively and in the best interests of both the bank and the clients. At the end of the term, the intern will have a basic understanding of the commercial banking line of business and be better able to assess whether commercial banking is a suitable career path.

    Daily work may include compiling and spreading financial statement information on loan clients, gathering and reporting IBIS World Industry data used for credit extension and approval to current and prospective bank customers, completing personal background and news searches on potential borrowers or guarantors for bank underwriting purposes.
  • Support or Risk Departments – The bank has a number of support and risk departments, including Data Analytics, Finance, Robotic Process Automation, Information Technology, Bank Secrecy Act, Compliance, Deposit & Loan Operations, Marketing, and Financial Intelligence. The department assignment will depend upon the bank’s needs and the intern’s experience. Strong candidates understand how to analyze, manipulate, and visualize data using platforms like Excel, PowerPoint, and possibly PowerBI.

    They are great communicators with the desire to work collaboratively to better service our clients and each other. At the end of the term, the intern will have a basic understanding of support and risk needs of a National Bank, common business problems resolved through the use of data and processes, as well as methods for collecting, monitoring and visualizing data for normal business use.

    Daily work may include providing assistance on database research, input and output; review and analysis of data; performance of compliance functions.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Ties to the Kansas City community post‑graduation strongly preferred
  • College students entering their junior or senior year strongly preferred, 20 completed college credit hours minimum
