Nurse - Surgical Specialties

Shift: Nights, three 12-hour shifts 1900 – 0730 with rotating weekends

Compensation:

· Base Pay Range: $34.46 - $51.02 per hour, based on experience

· Shift Differentials:
Additional $4.00 per hour for night shift and additional $3.00 per hour for weekends

MU Health Care is seeking a compassionate and skilled nurse to join our Surgical Specialties unit, where you will care for a diverse population of surgical and trauma patients. In this role, you will be essential in assessing and responding to complex post-operative needs, including wound care, drain management, and monitoring for complications associated with abdominal and bariatric surgeries. Your ability to provide attentive pain management and recognize subtle changes in patient condition will directly impact recovery outcomes.

You will educate patients and their families on post-surgical care, mobility, and healing expectations, empowering them throughout their recovery journey. Collaboration is key, as you will work closely with a multidisciplinary team to support rehabilitation and discharge planning. Strong communication skills will enable you to effectively coordinate care with physicians and care team members. Your commitment to evidence-based practice and continuous evaluation of patient outcomes will help drive high-quality care.

About Surgical Specialties

Surgical Specialties is a 28-bed unit dedicated to the care of surgical and trauma patients. This unit handles a wide range of complex general surgery cases, often involving abdominal interventions. We also specialize in elective bariatric surgeries.

MU Health Care is proud to be a Level 1 Trauma Center. Our staff is expertly trained to manage trauma and acute care surgical patients with diverse diagnoses and injuries. Our patients frequently require the use of wounds, drains, braces, and specialized equipment. We work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team, including physical and occupational therapy, dietary services, social work, and consulting physicians, to ensure the highest standard of patient care.

· Assesses the patient's condition and nursing needs, sets goals, and prescribes appropriate nursing actions to meet those goals and the physical, psychological, social, and rehabilitative patient needs, including discharge planning.

· Assesses, intervenes, and reassesses the patient's self-report and symptoms of pain promptly. Utilizes an appropriate tool for assessment and reassessment (0-10 numerical scale, FACES, or the FLACC.)
