Under the general supervision of the school principal, to develop students’ physical skills and abilities, strength, agility, poise, coordination, and teamwork; to develop students’ understanding of the importance of exercise to physical and mental well‑being; and to motivate students to work towards physical fitness, hygiene, and good health.
Reports to: Principal
Essential Functions- Develop and administer Physical Education classes consistent with Diocesan school goals and objectives.
- Teach knowledge of, and develop skills in, physical fitness, rhythm and dance, coordination and agility, exercise, and sports.
- Develop students’ concepts in leadership, teamwork, responsibility, and social skills; provide a safe and optimal learning environment; and give appropriate feedback regarding student progress, expectations, and goals.
- Conduct ongoing assessment of student growth and progress in physical education activities and modify instructional methods to fit individual students’ needs, including students with special needs.
- Continue to acquire professional knowledge and learn about current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops, professional meetings, or conducting research.
- Organize and maintain a system for accurate and complete record‑keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievements, and attendance as required by school procedures and applicable laws.
- Assist in coordinating extra‑curricular activities, including student performances, assemblies, and athletic events.
- Encourage parental involvement in students’ education and ensure effective communication with students and parents.
- Ensure that student conduct conforms to the school’s standards and district policies, and establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
- Coordinate with other professional staff members and participate in faculty meetings and committees.
- Select, requisition, and maintain appropriate instructional aids, supplies, and equipment and maintain inventory records.
- Inspect equipment and field areas to ensure they are in good and safe working order.
- Prepare for assigned classes and show written evidence of preparation upon the request of immediate supervisors.
- Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate.
- Confer with other staff members to plan and schedule lessons promoting learning while following approved curricula.
- Prepare objectives and outlines for courses of study, following curriculum guidelines and requirements of the state, diocese, and school.
- Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those objectives to students.
- Prepare students for later grades by encouraging them to explore learning opportunities and persevere with challenging tasks.
- Select, store, order, issue, and inventory classroom equipment, materials, and supplies. Prepare, organize, and label materials. Prepare the classroom for class activities. Create displays of students’ work.
- Provide a variety of materials and resources for children to explore, manipulate, and use in learning activities and imaginative play.
- Plan and supervise class projects, field trips, visits by guest speakers, or other experiential activities. Guide students in learning from those activities.
- Instruct students individually and in groups using various teaching methods such as lectures, discussions, and demonstrations.
- Organize and lead activities such as games, arts and crafts, music, and storytelling to promote physical, mental, and social development.
- Read books to entire classes or small groups.
- Use computers, audiovisual aids, and other equipment and materials to supplement presentations.
