Job Description

Elementary School Physical Education Teacher (Grades K-8)

Part-Time starting in August 2026
City & State: Columbia, PA

Payroll Grade: 14 FLSA Status: Exempt

Position Purpose

Under the general supervision of the school principal, the teacher will develop students’ physical skills and abilities, strength, agility, poise, coordination, and teamwork; foster an understanding of the importance of exercise for physical and mental well‑being; and motivate students toward physical fitness, hygiene, and good health.

Essential Functions
  • Develop and administer Physical Education classes consistent with Diocesan school goals and objectives.
  • Teach knowledge of and develop skills in physical fitness, rhythm and dance, coordination and agility, exercise, and sports.
  • Develop students’ concepts in leadership, teamwork, responsibility, and social skills; provide a safe learning environment and give feedback on student progress.
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of student growth and modify instruction to meet individual needs, including students with special needs.
  • Continuously acquire professional knowledge through seminars, workshops, or research.
  • Organize and maintain accurate record‑keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement, and attendance.
  • Assist in coordinating extra‑curricular activities, including performances, assemblies, and athletic events.
  • Encourage parental involvement and maintain effective communication with students and parents.
  • Ensure student conduct conforms to school standards and district policies, establishing a functional learning atmosphere.
  • Coordinate with other staff and participate in faculty meetings and committees.
  • Select and requisition appropriate instructional aids, supplies, and equipment, and maintain inventory records.
  • Inspect equipment and field areas to ensure safe use.
Responsibilities / Tasks for Elementary School Teacher
  • Prepare for assigned classes and provide written evidence of preparation upon request.
  • Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time.
  • Collaborate with other staff to plan and schedule lessons following approved curricula.
  • Prepare objectives and outlines for courses of study, following state, diocese, and school guidelines.
  • Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and communicate them to students.
  • Encourage students to explore learning opportunities and persevere with challenging tasks.
  • Manage classroom equipment, materials, and supplies, including storage, ordering, inventory, and labeling.
  • Provide materials and resources for exploration and imaginative play.
  • Plan and supervise class projects, field trips, visitors, and experiential activities.
  • Instruct students individually and in groups using lectures, discussions, and demonstrations.
  • Organize and lead activities such as games, arts and crafts, music, and storytelling.
  • Read to entire classes or small groups.
  • Use computers, audiovisual aids, and other equipment to supplement presentations.
  • Instruct and monitor students on the safe use of equipment and materials.
  • Assign and grade classwork and homework.
  • Prepare, administer, and grade tests and assignments to evaluate progress.
  • Administer standardized tests and interpret results to determine strengths and needs.
  • Observe and evaluate students’ performance, behavior, social development, and physical health.
  • Adapt teaching methods and materials to meet varying needs and interests.
  • Guide and counsel students with adjustment issues or academic problems.
  • Implement remedial programs for students needing extra help.
