Position Description
The Temporary Library Specialist provides support for the daily operations of the Access Services Department by performing a variety of customer service and circulation-related functions. This position assists with circulation, interlibrary loan (ILL), document delivery, and course reserves to ensure efficient access to library collections and services for students, faculty, staff, and community users. The position requires excellent customer service, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide courteous and professional customer service at the Access Services desk, in person, by phone, and through email.
- Perform circulation functions including checking materials in and out, processing renewals, collecting fines and fees as applicable, and assisting patrons with library accounts.
- Process, receive, and fulfill interlibrary loan (ILL) borrowing and lending requests using established library systems and procedures.
- Manage document delivery requests by retrieving, scanning, and electronically delivering library materials in accordance with copyright guidelines and library policies.
- Assist with the preparation, processing, maintenance, and removal of course reserve materials, including print and electronic reserves.
- Retrieve, shelve, shift, and maintain library collections to ensure accurate organization and accessibility.
- Process returned materials and identify items requiring repair, replacement, or special handling.
- Follow established library policies, procedures, and confidentiality standards.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent; bachelor's degree preferred.
- Customer service experience in a library, educational, or public service environment preferred.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to learn and use integrated library systems, interlibrary loan software, and standard office applications.
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks while maintaining accuracy.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
