Job Summary

The faculty of the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of South Carolina, Columbia campus, invites applications for a full time, professional-track position at the rank of Instructor to begin August 16, 2026. The position is a 9-month appointment with a 4:4 teaching load (or an equivalent of 12 credit hours of courses each academic semester) that centers around instruction and laboratory coordination in the field of Cell and Molecular Biology.

This is an annual appointment that may be renewed contingent upon Dean's approval, satisfactory performance, departmental needs, and the availability of funding.

The successful candidate will teach courses in the field of Cell and Molecular Biology and will coordinate the curriculum for the BIOL 302L (Cell and Molecular Biology Laboratory). The BIOL 302L Coordinator is responsible for overseeing all scheduled BIOL 302 lab sections over the course of the academic year (Fall and Spring semesters). The Coordinator is also responsible for training the GIAs (Graduate Instructional Assistants) that will be teaching the undergraduate labs each semester.

Leading this training in pedagogical and molecular lab skills requires the Coordinator to hold weekly prep meetings to teach the GIAs about the upcoming week's lab curriculum, sourcing all course materials for the week, and explaining how to successfully implement and execute the lab curriculum to their students. The BIOL 302L Coordinator is responsible for maintaining and/or developing new laboratory curriculum as the field evolves and maintaining equipment that is utilized in these teaching labs.

The Department of Biological Sciences is a multidisciplinary unit of approximately 2,200 undergraduate students, 80 graduate students, 38 tenure-line, and 25 professional track faculty representing a broad range of research areas ((Use the "Apply for this Job" box below).). Candidates must hold a minimum of a master's degree in biology or a closely related field (or PhD candidates without a Master's must be ABD) at the time of appointment. Strong organizational and communication skills are required.
