Summer Intern - Mapping​/GIS

Position: Paid Summer Intern - Mapping/GIS
This is a paid intern position in Mapping-IT Services to assist in daily operations of the department. This position will be filled with a current college student seeking a major in technology, GIS, or related field. This position is open for Summer of 2026.

Duties and Responsibilities

* Analysis and maintenance of GIS data including, but not limited to street centerlines, address points, and emergency service zone (ESZ) layers.

* Assists GIS/Mapping personnel with daily tasks including data entry and editing.

* Working with mapping department to understand GIS workflows.

* Understands and adheres to Shelby County GIS procedures and workflows.

* Performs all duties in a safe and efficient manner.

* Performs all other duties as assigned by supervision.

Minimum Requirements

* 2 years coursework toward degree in Geography, Computer Science, or similar discipline.

* Excellent communication skills.

* Strong computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Office.

* Able to work with minimal supervision in an office environment.

* Able to pass background check for system access.

Preferred Requirements

* Experience or coursework using queries in Arc Map to filter and view data.

* Experience with and interest in data analysis and data maintenance.

* Experience editing GIS data in Arc Map and/or ArcGIS Pro.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office environment. Some field data collection may be required on occasion.

Physical Requirements

Work is light in nature consisting of sitting, standing, walking, lifting and carrying.
