Job Summary

This position reports directly to the office of Shelby County Community Corrections. All inquiries should be directed to . This position is required to perform professional level work involving the evaluation and recommendation for referral of substance abuse offenders to appropriate programs. The employee monitors the progress of those offenders until completion of court-imposed requirements. The employee is required to meet with municipal, district, and circuit judges during court to begin the initial screening of defendants.

This work also involves providing community education and technical assistance in the areas of alcohol and/or drug abuse, and the role of the court system in reducing the incidence of substance abuse offenses. The employee must have some flexibility of work hours, since some duties may be performed outside of the traditional workday. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Court Referral Manager.

Attend sessions of municipal, district, and circuit court to screen defendants assigned to the program by judges.

Evaluates each defendant through interviews, and instruments and procedures approved by the AOC.

Recommends appropriate court referral services such as Level I, Level II, and Youth & Juvenile Education programs and serves as liaison to representatives of court referral programs.

Develops and maintains a file on each offender with information such as arrest records, test scores, and other pertinent information which could be utilized by all agencies working with the offender.

Reviews sentence and probation requirements with offenders and monitors participants for compliance with probation requirements, providing follow-up support as necessary.

Provides community education on the ramifications of alcohol and other drug abuse, as well as the court system's role in reducing the incidence of substance abuse offenses.

Travels within designated area to perform duties such as court attendance, and as required, for quarterly meetings with the AOC or for training.

Assists in establishing short and long-range goals, plans and priorities for the Court Referral Program with the AOC and provides reports to the AOC as requested, summarizing referrals made, number of participants and other statistical data.

Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum requirements:

• BS or BA degree from SACS accredited university with major course work in counseling, criminal justice, or a related field with two years of work experience in substance abuse or counseling
• Direct experience administering policies and procedure
• Caseload management experience
• Considerable knowledge of substance abuse, and addiction.
• Knowledge of organization, management and confidentiality.
• Some knowledge of evaluation tools and program evaluation.
• Some knowledge of the organization, functions, responsibilities and procedures of courts.
• Skill in operating a personal computer with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, IE, and PowerPoint.
• Ability to work without close supervision and to be self-directed.
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Ability to travel overnight when necessary.
• Interviewing skills.
• Applicants must possess and maintain a valid State of Alabama driver's license

Working Environment:

• Indoors and outside assignment areas with differing terrain and conditions.

Physical Demands:

• Must satisfactorily complete employment physical and be capable of performing the essential functions of the position.
• Must be able to operate a vehicle or transport van.

This position requires a post offer/pre-employment physical examination, drug screen, and background check. This position also requires unconventional work hours with some evenings.
