Job Description

Columbus Technical College is seeking a qualified and experienced professional to serve as Program Director for the Commercial Truck Driving program. Under the direction of the Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Program Director provides leadership and coordination for the Commercial Truck Driving program and its faculty. This individual will be responsible for ensuring high-quality instruction, effective program administration, student success, regulatory compliance, workforce alignment, and continuous program improvement.

The successful candidate will provide leadership for classroom, range, and behind-the-wheel training and will maintain strong relationships with employers, industry partners, and other stakeholders to ensure the program prepares students for successful entry into the commercial transportation industry. This is a full-time/exempt position. This position will require the following physical abilities:
Sit, stand, walk, bend, push, and pull for (3) to (4) continuous hours, or longer at times in various indoor and outdoor working conditions. Must be able to get underneath trucks and trailers to demonstrate part locations to students. Must be able to walk along beside the truck during range maneuvers. Please note the following information regarding this position:
May require teaching on or off campus throughout our service delivery area (Muscogee County, Stewart County, Quitman County, Chattahoochee County, Harris County, and Talbot County). May require travel. Will require teaching morning, afternoon, evening, or weekend classes.

Responsibilities
  • Provide effective classroom, range, and behind-the-wheel instruction in Commercial Truck Driving/CDL operations
  • Teach students the knowledge, skills, and competencies necessary for safe operation of commercial motor vehicles
  • Provide instruction in vehicle inspection, basic vehicle systems, safe operating procedures, defensive driving, trip planning, cargo handling, and other applicable CDL competencies
  • Demonstrate and evaluate proper vehicle control, backing maneuvers, coupling and uncoupling procedures, turning, shifting, braking, lane positioning, and other required driving skills
  • Prepare students for successful completion of applicable CDL knowledge and skills testing
  • Develop and deliver instructional materials in accordance with TCSG curriculum standards, course outlines, program objectives, and applicable regulatory requirements
  • Provide instruction consistent with applicable Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requirements and Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) CDL requirements
  • Provides leadership, supervision, and support to full-time and adjunct faculty assigned to the Commercial Truck Driving program
  • Ensures faculty adhere to established work schedules, instructional assignments, office hours, attendance requirements, and college policies and procedures
  • Observes, evaluates, and documents the effectiveness of full-time and adjunct faculty in accordance with college procedures
  • Provide timely and appropriate feedback to students regarding academic, technical, and driving performance
  • Maintain accurate attendance, student progress, grading, and instructional records in accordance with college and TCSG requirements
  • Maintain a safe and professional training environment during classroom, range, and behind-the-wheel instruction
  • Coordinates faculty recruitment and hiring in collaboration with Academic Affairs and Human Resources and verifies faculty qualifications in accordance with applicable college and TCSG requirements
