Job Summary

The GIS Technician is a geographically dispersed and cross-functional team that has the responsibility for the continuous development, data delivery and quality assurance, execution, and improvement of work activities as well as processes which directly support NiSource's gas and electric operations. The GIS Technician will review gas and electric facility data capture for completion information to ensure compliance with proposed engineering designs, company policies, practices, standards, and other applicable codes.

The Technician will update GIS and a work management system to accurately reflect gas and electric system updates. As part of this process, the Technician will ensure that facility data is created, updated, and maintained accurately in the work management, GIS and plant accounting systems. The data will also be made accessible in accordance with all designated standards for timeliness and accuracy to support operational needs and meet internal customer expectations.

The Technician will provide technical assistance and support for Field Engineering, Construction and Field Operations staff involved in the construction, operation, and maintenance of distribution facilities. Natural gas and electric distribution facilities consist of main lines, service lines, and measurement & regulation equipment. Design capital projects include providing gas and electric service to new customers, public roadway improvements and relocations, gas and electric system improvement and maintenance.

Functions
  • Performs Quality Management for new and existing facility data to ensure accurate and timely recording of natural gas and electric facility updates in a work management system and a GIS system.
  • Reviews project completion information and geospatial data to assure compliance with proposed designs that adhere to policies, practices, standards, and applicable codes.
  • Uses completion reports, “as-built” sketches, right of way agreements, tax district documentation, and other related information to ensure the strategic, timely, accurate, and cost-effective recording of facility records, land base records, and taxing district boundaries in the GIS system.
  • Ensures all updates to the work management system, GIS, and plant accounting systems are completed timely and accurately in accordance with department objectives, goals and priorities.
  • Collaborates with Leader and key business partners in the establishment of group goals, objectives, and priorities to achieve department performance metrics.
  • Recommends, creates, implements and maintains improved systems, procedures and processes to advance department and company goals and initiatives.
  • Assurance that project data is consistent with project design that comply with policies, practices, standards, and applicable codes, while meeting critical deadlines.
  • Accurate and timely capture of natural gas and electric facility data in the enterprise GIS system.
  • Provides project support as well as respond to inquiries to assist with key business decisions.
  • Partners with stakeholders, such as Field Operations, System Operations, Finance (Asset Accounting), IT, and Pipeline Safety and Compliance, to meet strategic business goals and objectives.
  • Provides training, mentoring and support to new personnel.
Required Qualifications For Position
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • 2+ years' experience working with geospatial technology including but not limited to GIS, CAD, GNSS, or surveying, OR 2+ years' experience with gas or electric engineering design, records management, or operations records support
  • 2 + years' Experience in the interpretation and application of standards, codes, regulations and proposed designs.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of various PC applications and software (i.e. Word, Excel).
  • Proficiency in basic math, geometry, and mapping concepts.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Strong communication skills; both oral and written.
  • Ability to be self-directed and effective in a geographically dispersed organization.
