Overview

At Houston Methodist, the Nursing Supervisor manages 24‑hour comprehensive operational delivery and quality of patient care in designated areas in collaboration with the Manager and Director. The role develops and implements performance initiatives to ensure optimal patient safety, outcomes, and customer satisfaction. It demonstrates leadership, critical thinking, and effective oral and written communication skills, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and representing nursing in committees and the broader organization.

Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited School of Nursing
  • Experience: Two years of nursing experience
  • Licenses and Certifications (Required): RN – Registered Nurse, Texas State Licensure, Texas Board of Nursing; PSV Compact License – obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days if establishing Texas residency
  • Licenses and Certifications (Preferred): BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) – American Heart Association;
    Magnet – ANCC Recognized Certification
  • Skills and Abilities:
    • Demonstrates competencies for safe job performance as assessed through ongoing evaluations
    • Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English, especially regarding patient or employee safety
    • Communicates with patients, physicians, families, and coworkers using a customer‑service focus and positive language principles

  • Creates and maintains a collaborative environment by mentoring and leading teamwork within the department.
  • Consults with department leadership on coaching, corrective counseling, and staff performance to achieve outcomes, including conducting feedback sessions and providing recognition.
  • Participates in management responsibilities for selection, scheduling, supervision, retention, and evaluation of employees, ensuring proper training and compliance with policies and procedures while aiming to meet turnover goals.
  • Models clear, professional communication to resolve problems and fosters critical thinking by expressing decision rationale and consistent follow‑up.
Service Essential Functions
  • Ensures daily flex team operations comply with department policies and procedures, monitoring coverage to maximize management and staff presence.
  • Responds to patient and employee concerns, taking appropriate action and escalating to leadership as required.
  • Leads and maintains high customer satisfaction while providing the highest level of service and patient care.
Quality/Safety Essential Functions
  • Adopts a proactive approach to optimize outcomes by monitoring and improving workflow, using peer accountability, and identifying solutions collaboratively; participates in process improvements and corrective actions.
  • Monitors and ensures employee compliance with competencies, credentials, in‑services, policies, and procedures, assisting management with non‑compliance actions.
  • Facilitates and participates in annual in‑service training and focal point review process; follows safety rules and reports accidents and hazards promptly.
Finance Essential Functions
  • Assists in managing department expenditures to achieve financial targets through productivity optimization and resource efficiency.
  • Manages staffing needs, including scheduling, time‑off requests, and timekeeping.
Growth/Innovation Essential Functions
  • Implements change, motivating employees to follow through so behavior changes; supports organizational goals and vision and introduces innovative solutions for practice or workflow improvements.
  • Participates in hospital activities as a magnet champion and shared governance leader, ensuring the flex team is represented in governance processes and committees.
