Overview

Responsibilities
  • Under immediate supervision this position performs a variety of manual and semi-skilled duties in support of street, water, sewer, and facility maintenance operations. The position involves roadway repair, utility support tasks, operation of vehicles and equipment, and physically demanding outdoor work in varied conditions.
  • Perform street repair activities including asphalt repair and replacement, concrete and curb work, and related roadway tasks.
  • Perform water and sewer system maintenance tasks including catch basin cleaning, hydrant painting, rat baiting, and related utility support work.
  • Operate vehicles and equipment such as pickup trucks, dump trucks, backhoes, air compressors, pavement saws, and other equipment required for assigned work.
  • Perform physical demanding manual labor including lifting, shoveling, raking, sweeping, snow and ice removal, mowing, litter cleanup, and related tasks.
  • Conduct work in confined spaces and adverse environments as required, following applicable safety procedures.
  • Performs daily custodial duties at the Maintenance and Service building.
  • Identify and report equipment issues, safety concerns, or field conditions to the Utilities Foremen or crew leader to ensure appropriate action is taken.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a safe and clean condition.
  • Performs other duties as required.
Education and Experience
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • One to three years of experience performing manual labor tasks in public works, construction, maintenance, or a related field.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Michigan, Commercial Driver’s License, Class A with no restrictions and N endorsement.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain additional certifications as required by the Division.
Knowledge of
  • Safety requirements for operation of trucks and other equipment
  • Occupational hazards and required safety precautions
  • General knowledge of confined space entry.
Skill in
  • Following written and oral directions; communicating clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Operating vehicles and equipment such as dump trucks, backhoes, and related machinery.
  • Performing physically demanding work safely and efficiently.
  • Using hand tools and power tools associated with maintenance and service operations.
Ability to
  • Read maps and navigate City streets.
  • Work cooperatively as part of a crew.
  • Maintain an attendance record acceptable to the City.
Work Environment

Frequent exposure to outdoor weather, including extreme heat, cold, rain, wind, snow, and ice. Regular exposure to dust, dirt, fumes, noise, working near moving mechanical part, and vibration. Typical noise level is very loud (e.g. jack hammer work, garbage recycle, plant), near traffic and in potentially hazardous environments depending on assignment. This position may work varied shifts and must be available to work overtime, including weekends, holidays, and regular workdays as needed.

This includes responding to emergency situations that require attention outside of standard working hours.

Physical Demands
  • Frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force.
  • Frequent standing, walking and sitting.
  • Frequent balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching with hands and arms, and driving city vehicles.
  • Frequent use of gross manipulation skills including, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, grasping, and operating tools and equipment requiring significant hand and arm strength.
  • Occasionally required to climb stairs and ladders, work in elevated locations and smell toxic or flammable vapors.
  • Standard hearing and vision capabilities, including close vision, distance vision, depth perception, color perception and peripheral vision.
  • Clear vocal communication for expressing ideas.
