Summary
Utilizes knowledge of the CWW system, GIS, GPS, maps, and electronic line location devices to locate valves and hydrants for inspection, operation, and maintenance. Responsible for executing flushing programs, disinfection of new lines, valve exercising, and hydrant repair. Also, install Hydra-Stops as required to facilitate water main repair. Performs heavy manual labor and operates required mechanical equipment. Exercises responsibility for upkeep and preventative maintenance of all mechanical equipment used by the Team.
Works under the supervision of the Distribution Supervisor. However, much of the assigned work is performed independently, with no direct supervision. Supervises one Assistant Valve/Hydrant Technician and is responsible for his/her training in the operation of all related equipment. Attend all seminars and training provided by CWW. In addition, all other functions and responsibilities are assigned.
- Prepare for daily assignments by ensuring the assigned truck is loaded with all necessary materials, equipment, and supplies.
- Assists in unloading, determines appropriate setup, and operates with little or no direct supervision specific equipment used in Team operations, such as tapping machines, valve equipment, etc.
- Ensures proper traffic control, safety measures, and confined space procedures are followed.
- Inputs work orders into the computer system.
- Locates valves and performs inspection, operation, maintenance, and/or repair as needed.
- Inspects, operates, maintains, and/or repairs fire hydrants as needed.
- Flushes at hydrants, blow-offs, or installs automatic flushers in the Water Distribution System as needed to preserve water quality.
- Installs Hydra-Stops as needed to facilitate water main repairs.
- Maintains appropriate records of work performed, enters pertinent details into the computerized work order tracking system, and obtains GPS coordinates. Communicate with the Distribution Supervisor to provide job feedback and receive new assignments.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Directly supervises one Valve/Hydrant Team employee and is responsible for training him/her in operating all related equipment.

Education & ExperienceA high school graduate or a GED is the minimum requirement for the position. Water distribution system experience and state certification are required. Computer skills preferred. Possession of a valid driver's License and a clean driving record is required.
Language SkillsAbility to read and interpret documents such as maps, drawings, safety rules, and MSDS material. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence, and keep records. Ability to communicate with contractors and customers as needed.
Mathematical SkillsAbility to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to draw and read graphs.
Reasoning AbilityAbility to apply common sense to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
