Position Title: Bus Mechanic

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Salary: $19.58 - $24.79 hourly (Pay determined based on verified experience)

Work Days: 249

Location: Transportation Department

Reports To: Shop Supervisor

Primary Function: The job of Bus Mechanic is designed to ensure the availability of vehicles in safe operating condition, including determining needed repairs and/or replacements, performing required repairs and preventive maintenance, and providing written documentation of repairs to meet district, state, and federal requirements.

Responsibilities
  • Demonstrates prompt and regular attendance.
  • Diagnoses vehicle malfunctions for the purpose of determining needed vehicle repairs and/or replacements.
  • Fabricates parts for the purpose of providing items necessary for repairs.
  • Inspects assigned vehicles (e.g. brake systems, oil levels, coolant, tire pressure, wiper blades, fan belts, exterior and interior condition, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that the vehicle is in a safe operating condition.
  • Performs routine vehicle maintenance program (e.g. oil change, tire rotation, brake check, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining vehicles in a safe operating condition and meeting mandated requirements.
  • Performs minor body work (e.g. front ends, upholstery, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining the appearance and safe operation of the vehicles.
  • Prepares written materials (e.g. repair and maintenance logs, parts lists, warrant claims, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference and meeting mandated requirements.
  • Responds to road calls regarding disabled vehicles for the purpose of performing emergency repair work in the field.
  • Attends unit-in-service and safety meetings for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions.
  • Cleans assigned vehicles, both interior and exterior for the purpose of maintaining appearance, sanitation and safety of vehicle.
  • Maintains tools, equipment and/or shop area for the purpose of ensuring the availability of tools and equipment, and safety within the workspace.
  • Maintains records of repairs, costs, vehicle warranties, etc. for the purpose of documenting required information and meeting regulatory requirements.
  • Repairs vehicle systems and components, etc. (e.g. diesel/gasoline engines, transmissions, differentials, clutches, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of vehicles in safe operation condition.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

    • Educational Level: High School Diploma or GED preferred
    • Certification/License

      Required:

      Valid Driver's License – CDL with “P” and “S” endorsements must be obtained within six months of hire date.
    • Experience:

      Considerable experience as an automotive mechanic or heavy equipment mechanic.
    • Physical

      Activities:

      Routine physical activities that are required to fulfill job responsibilities; walking, standing, kneeling, negotiating stairs and ladders, lifting and transporting 75 pounds over short distances.
