Summary

Under the supervision of the Resident Services Director, incumbent is responsible for transporting residents in a safe, responsible manner to scheduled appointments and other activities. Assists residents on and off transportation vehicles, including helping with residents’ assistive devices. Monitor and assist residents when away from facility.

Accountabilties Essential Functions

Drive community vehicles for purpose of transporting residents to appointments and other activities/outings; assist residents on and off of vehicles; helps residents with assistive devices such as wheelchairs, walkers, canes, etc.; keep driver’s license and/or chauffeur’s license updated and remains eligible for licensing in accordance with state/federal regulations, if applicable.

Responsible for the maintenance of community vehicles; reports any hazardous conditions, equipment, accidents and/or incidents; maintain necessary travel logs and transportation charges; conduct pre-trip vehicle inspections; report any unsanitary conditions or needed repairs of vehicles to supervisor. Responsible for scheduling resident appointments/requests.

Assists with activities as time permits and as needed; attends meetings and training as needed.

Marginal Functions

Performs other duties as assigned by authorized personnel or as may be required to meet emergency situations.

May be necessary to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.

Knowledge and Skill

Must possess a basic understanding of the mechanical components of a vehicle in order to communicate regarding the maintenance needs of same.

Ability to remain calm under emergency situations and while dealing with multiple tasks.

Must have a compassion for and appreciation of the elderly population.

Qualifications

Ability to read and comprehend memos, reports and a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral and diagrammatic or schedule form.

High School education or GED preferred, but not required.

Must have a valid driver’s or chauffeur’s license.

Must possess and exhibit a strong positive attitude toward customer service and have a genuine interest in geriatric care and uphold the philosophy of the community.

Ability to convey information on a person-to-person basis clearly and distinctly so that it is easily understood.

Ability to organize and prioritize.

Must be available for evening and weekend hours.

Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel and the general public.

Must work harmoniously with other community personnel.

Must have patience, tact, cheerful disposition and enthusiasm, as well as be willing to handle residents based on whatever maturity level at which they are currently functioning.

Ability to function in a confidential manner and to relate information concerning a resident’s condition.

Physical Requirements

Must possess sight/hearing senses or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so that the requirements of this position can be fully met.

Requires ability to sit and drive for extended periods of time.

Must be able to lift and/or push a minimum of 50 lbs. and be able to push, pull, move and/or carry such weight a minimum distance of 100 feet.

Requires reaching above, below and at shoulder level.

Job’s Normal Work Environment

Work area may be subject to noise, distractions and interruptions.

Work environment involves slight physical risks with the possibility of muscle strain from lifting or twisting; possibility of slips or falls; may be exposed to communicable diseases.

Type of Equipment Typically Used in this Job

This position requires the limited applications of manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination necessary for the handling and operation of community vehicles.

The following types of equipment are typically used to perform the job: passenger van, automobile, telephone and 2-way radio.
