Fleet Maintenance Supervisor

This position is responsible for supervising the operation of the Fleet Maintenance Heavy Equipment Shop.

  • Supervises the operation of the Heavy Equipment Shop.
  • Processes repair orders.
  • Processes repair parts invoices; orders parts.
  • Organizes personnel work schedules, training, vacations, service calls, and weekend on-call rosters; prepares time sheets; participates in the selection of new employees; evaluates the work of subordinates; recommends terminations.
  • Repairs equipment in shop and on site.
  • Prepares weekly and end-of-month reports; attends meetings.
  • Supervises the work of personnel engaged in repairing and servicing heavy equipment.
  • Repairs and services hauling trailers, tractors, mowers, motor graders, trucks, street sweepers, bulldozers, loaders, back hoes, excavators, landfill compactors, track loaders, and rubber tire loaders.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of advanced heavy equipment systems to include the following: hydraulic, air conditioning, electrical and electronics, tier 4 and tier 5 diesel engines, cooling, and transmission systems.

  • Knowledge of accepted personnel practices, procedures, and policies, including supervision, training, and performance evaluation.
  • Skill in the operation of heavy construction equipment.
  • Skill in the use of computers and various software programs used by the department.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of specialized training in the occupational field, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions and to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years experience or service. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

This position is required to supervise state inmate labor. Employee must pass the Department of Corrections three-day certification within the time frame required by this department, which is normally six (6) months but may be altered. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid commercial driver's license (CDL) issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

Retirement Plan The Columbus Consolidated Government offers a defined benefit retirement plan to eligible employees who work in General Government and in Public Safety. Employees in the pension plan must meet both age and years of service requirements to qualify for retirement. The current vesting period is ten years, and the current pension contribution rate is 8% of your gross salary.
