Position: ADULT BASIC EDUCATION WELDING TEACHING ASSISTANT

McDowell Adult Education Teaching Assistant / Welding

McDowell Adult Education is seeking a dependable and student-focused Welding Teaching Assistant (TA) to support welding instruction and student success in both classroom and lab environments. The Welding TA assists the lead instructor with instructional activities, classroom management, safety procedures, and individualized student support. This role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about workforce training and helping adult learners develop the skills necessary for employment in the welding industry.

This position is two nights per week from 5-9.

Essential Functions

  • Assist the lead instructor with daily instructional and hands-on welding activities.
  • Support adult learners during classroom, lab, and practical welding exercises.
  • Provide individualized and small-group assistance to reinforce welding concepts, safety procedures, and basic English language development when needed.
  • Prepare, organize, and maintain welding materials, tools, equipment, and instructional resources for classroom and lab activities.
  • Help maintain a safe, clean, and organized learning environment in accordance with all applicable safety regulations and program requirements.
  • Monitor student participation and engagement during instructional activities and practice sessions.
  • Reinforce instructional materials, skills, and learning strategies based on individual student needs and learning goals.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with students, instructors, and program staff regarding student progress and participation.
  • Communicate concerns related to attendance, punctuality, academic progress, or student barriers to the lead instructor and Workforce Coordinator.
  • Assist with classroom setup, cleanup, inventory management, and equipment organization.
  • Follow all applicable safety rules, procedures, and regulations governing welding instruction and laboratory operations.
  • Support students as they prepare welding projects and testing materials required for certification and assessment.
  • Foster a positive, respectful, and inclusive learning environment that encourages student success and workforce readiness.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support program operations and student achievement.

Additional Duties

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry instructional materials, equipment, and supplies as needed.
  • Ability to safely demonstrate and assist with welding-related tasks and activities.
  • Ability to work in a welding lab environment while wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Position involves working in both classroom and welding lab environments. Requires standing, walking, bending, lifting materials, and assisting students during hands-on activities.
  • Exposure to welding equipment, tools, and shop environments while adhering to established safety protocols.
  • The Welding TA typically rotates between classroom instruction and welding lab activities, providing support in each area throughout the training program. During the final weeks of a course, the majority of time may be spent assisting students with welding projects and test preparation.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Welding experience, training, certification, or related industry experience preferred.
  • Experience working with adult learners, workforce training programs, or educational settings preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, instructors, and staff.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to safety procedures.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of an instructional team.
  • Commitment to supporting adult learners from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to work in the United States and pass a Criminal History Background Check.

Salary and Benefits

  • $20 per hour.
  • An additional $1 per hour will be paid from referendum funds.
  • Part Time, no benefits available.
