Job Title:
Principal Mechanical Design Engineer
Job Location:
305 Franklin Street, Columbus, Indiana 47201, and various unanticipated worksites throughout the U.S.
- Coach, mentor and train entry-level Mechanical Design Engineers.
- Collaborate with vendors to develop mechanical components and assemblies.
- Conduct gap analysis between existing product functionality and features when compared to competitors' equipment and end user and customer needs.
- Develop process improvement and implementation plans.
- Review accuracy of product documentation.
- Evaluate product nonconformance and recommend design modifications.
- Analyze new and existing materials and methods to solve design challenges.
- Research design options and perform experiments to determine potential design feasibility or application.
- Verify alternate part source opportunities and identify cost reduction opportunities.
- Ensure that equipment is designed, built and performs as designed.
- Manage product technical lifecycle.
- Perform root cause analysis (DFMEA) and error correction of system-level problems relating to design and production.
- Perform risk assessment.
- Suggest enhancements to mechanical procedures and share lessons learned.
- Master’s degree (or foreign equivalent degree) in mechanical engineering or automotive engineering, or related field, plus 4 years of experience in engineering or technical positions which includes the following skills:
- Creating models using CAD software (CATIA, Unigraphics, Solid Works, ProE, Autodesk Inventor, or AutoCAD) and releasing 2D and 3D data in Teamcenter or Solid Works Vault.
- Understanding and analyzing stamping feasibility for sheet metal products for automotive applications.
- Calculating and applying GD&T.
- Using Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) to identify and prevent design failures.
- Communicating with assembly plants and suppliers regarding development and production prototype issues.
- Working with Class A or Class B Surface products.
- In lieu of a master’s degree and 4 years of experience, a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or automotive engineering, or related field, and 6 years of post‑bachelor's, progressive experience in engineering or technical roles which includes the above skills will also be accepted.
