The Payroll, Leave & Workers’ Compensation Manager is responsible for the strategic oversight, compliance, and operational management of payroll processing, employee leave programs, and workers’ compensation administration. This role ensures accurate and timely payroll delivery, regulatory compliance, risk mitigation, and a positive employee experience while leading continuous improvement initiatives across all related processes.
What You’ll Be Doing- Lead end-to-end multi-state payroll operations, ensuring accurate, timely processing and full compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
- Oversee and optimize payroll systems and integrations (HRIS, benefits, timekeeping); drive automation, system enhancements, and continuous process improvements.
- Develop, implement, and enforce payroll policies, procedures, and internal controls; lead compliance reviews and external audits.
- Supervise and develop payroll and leave administration staff while maintaining strict confidentiality of associate information.
- Direct all Leave of Absence programs; advise associates and managers on maternity, paternity, medical, disability, military, and unpaid leave; manage reasonable accommodations (ADA, PWFA, etc.).
- Oversee workers’ compensation claims from reporting through resolution, ensuring regulatory compliance; partner with third-party administrators, insurers, legal counsel, Safety, and HR on claims management, return-to-work programs, and prevention initiatives.
- Build strong cross-functional partnerships with HR, Finance, Legal, and Operations; prepare reports and executive summaries on payroll accuracy, leave utilization, and workers’ compensation metrics.
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Communication, Organizational Leadership, or related field.
- 5-8+ years of progressive experience in payroll, leave administration, and/or workers’ compensation, including multi-state payroll and complex leave laws.
- 5+ years of leadership experience.
- Strong knowledge of federal and state labor laws (FLSA, FMLA, ADA, wage and hour regulations).
- Experience managing payroll systems and HRIS platforms.
- Proven ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced environment, managing competing priorities with strong organizational skills, attention to detail, discretion, and sound judgement.
- Ability to communicate complex information clearly and effectively to diverse audiences while fostering a collaborative, professional team environment.
- Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning, process improvement, and operational excellence.
- Positive, confident, and solutions-oriented approach with flexibility to adapt to evolving business needs.
Enjoy the best of both worlds with a hybrid schedule—collaborate in person at our Columbus, IN or Greene, NY office and work remotely Thursdays and Fridays.
What Your Total Compensation & Benefits Package will look like:Salary - $106,060 - $150,933 per year. Compensation depends on the selected candidate’s education and experience.
