Purpose of Position and Reporting Department
This position involves skilled inspection responsibilities to secure and maintain compliance with codes governing building construction, alterations, and demolition, with emphasis on HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems. The work includes inspection of a variety of building systems installations to determine compliance with legally established standards. General work assignments include independent field inspections with reasonable judgement relating to established codes, and all activities are periodically reviewed for conformance with job goals.
MajorDuties and Responsibilities
- Inspects buildings in the course of construction, alterations and/or demolition for general conformity with standard codes
- Reviews construction plans for general conformity with standard codes
- Communicates with architects, building owners and contractors concerning the code enforcement process
- Maintains reports for all inspections
- Performs related work as required
- Accepts direction from Department Manager as required
Knowledge of:
- Methods and techniques concerning codes
- Regulations and laws relating to building construction
- Possible defects and flaws in building construction and corrective measures necessary
Ability to:
- Comprehend and work from plans and blueprints
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all other employees, contractors, design professionals and the general public
- Present ideas effectively, both orally and written
- High School Graduate or equivalent with supplementary courses in engineering related courses directed toward building structures
- Minimum of five years experience as a building inspector, engineer, architect or in a working environment as a supervisor or lead mechanic over HVAC, plumbing and electric work environment
- Reports to County Building Officer
- Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain and humidity
- Exposure to construction sites, dust, noise and potentially hazardous conditions is common
- Requires frequent walking, standing, climbing ladders, stooping, kneeling and navigating uneven terrain
- Ability to access rooftops, crawl spaces, attics and confined areas is necessary
- Requires close, distance and peripheral vision, as well as depth perception and the ability to adjust focus
- Must be able to read plans, inspect details, and identify code violations or safety hazards
- May require lifting and carrying objects up to 25-50 pounds
- Must be able to communicate effectively with contractors, property owners and staff
- Occasional extended hours or emergency response duties may be required
