Position Function

The Instructor I, II, or III position is under the administrative supervision of the Head of the Department of Aerospace Engineering (ASE). This is a full-time, non-tenure-track, 9-month faculty position. An instructor in ASE is an engineer and a scholar with a strong interest in teaching, supervising undergraduate students working in the ASE labs, and providing service to ASE. Responsibilities during the fall and spring semesters include service and teaching and coordinating the delivery of the undergraduate engineering mechanics and aerospace courses (primarily laboratory courses).

Teaching and service duties may also be available for extra compensation during summer school.

The ASE department offers an enriching undergraduate program leading to a Bachelor of Science degree, as well as challenging and exciting graduate programs leading to the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Founded in 1935, the aerospace engineering program is one of the most established in the nation. Aerospace engineers are primarily focused on the design, fabrication, testing, and analysis of aircraft and spacecraft.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following examples are illustrations of the various types of duties assigned to this position. The absence of specific statements of duties does not exclude those duties from the position if the work is a logical assignment of the position.

  • Teach aerospace engineering courses as needed. This may include aerospace laboratory courses (ASE Lab I, II, III) and aerospace and aeronautical courses (e.g. aircraft and spacecraft design, propulsion, aircraft/spacecraft performance).
  • Teach sections of Engineering Mechanics courses (EM 2413, EM 2433, EM 3213, and EM 3313).
  • Assist the Facilities Coordinator with the safe and effective running of the ASE laboratories in both Walker and Patterson buildings.
  • Serve on and work with ASE Committees as requested.
  • Advise prospective and current students regarding course scheduling and curriculum requirements.
  • Provide advising, mentoring, and career guidance to students.
  • Participate in developing or implementing the department’s strategic plan, as requested by the department head.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

A master’s degree in aerospace engineering or closely related field is required. Excellent written and oral communication skills are necessary. Rank is commensurate upon education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Beyond the minimum qualifications, professional registration, or ability to qualify for registration, and a B.S. degree in aerospace engineering are highly desired. Some college teaching experience is also preferred.

Excellent oral and communication skills.
