The Lab Metallurgist is responsible for ensuring the safe, quality, and reliable operation of the metallurgical lab. The lab contains equipment to perform mechanical testing (tensile testing and hardness), along with equipment to perform metallurgical analysis (sample prep, optical microscope, and SEM). This position would oversee procedures and scheduling of equipment and testing, supervise lab technicians, and communicate with department metallurgists and process operations.
- Promote and maintain safe and efficient work environment
- Select the appropriate analysis technique for a given material and interpret the resulting data, coordinating with process and product metallurgists to determine next steps of investigations
- Generate failure analysis reports to be shared with the production team as well as customers
- Maintain calibration, verification and operation of lab equipment, including laboratory equipment in use on the production floor as well as laboratory calibration standards
- Metallographic sample preparation, inspection and characterization of aluminum material from casting to finished project, including material finished to a customer use product.
- Data collection including recording and analyzing test results, maintaining accurate records, and reporting deviations or non-conformities
- Support ISO/IEC 17025, as well as additional customer testing compliance requirements
- Coordinate testing workflow to ensure prompt sample turnaround times while ensuring testing accuracy and standard compliance
- Coordinate with department metallurgists in performing testing for trials and additional testing as required for product and process improvement or development
- Other duties may be assigned as needed
Required
- 4 year degree in Metallurgical and Materials Science Engineering or Materials Science. (Additional 4 year degrees in other majors may be allowable depending on curriculum
- Experience with reading, understanding and conveying technical specifications
- Highly effective verbal and written communication as well as interpersonal skills with a history of technical report writing
- Organizational and time management skills – ability and desire to successfully manage multiple time dependent projects
- Computer literacy including Office Suite and basic database query
- Ability and desire to work well in a team oriented, fast paced learning and startup environment
Preferred
- Preference will be given to candidates who have both an applicable 4 year degree and 3 years of hands on experience or Maters Degree.
- Candidates with wrought aluminum inspection and characterization experience, particularly in end use cases like can, automotive or industrial applications are preferred.
- Testing in more than one area of aluminum material testing as listed above in requirements.
- Prior startup experience
