Environmental and Safety Compliance Engineer

PACCAR Engine Company's $400 million engine manufacturing and technology facility in Columbus, Mississippi will begin production in late 2010. The 12.9L engines produced at the Mississippi plant will be PACCAR Engine Company's most fuel-efficient and highest-technology diesel engines.

The Environmental and Safety Compliance Engineer is responsible for the interpretation, implementation, and enforcement of federal, state, local, and corporate environmental and safety regulations in order for the PACCAR Engine Plant to maintain compliance. The Environmental and Safety Compliance Engineer will initiate programs to support PACCAR Engine Company's goal of maintaining a World Class Safety and Environmental program. This position will provide support to both the PACCAR Engine Company (PEC) and PACCAR Remanufacturing facilities.

The successful candidate will be expected to work across both locations as business needs require.

Job Functions / Responsibilities:

  • Interface with local, state, and federal agencies as well as PACCAR corporate with regards to all environmental inspections, permitting, and compliance issues managing corrective actions and follow-up responses
  • Develop, maintain, and enforce formal compliance plans, procedures and documentation including ISO 14001, Zero Waste to Landfill, Title V, wastewater discharge, hazardous waste, universal waste, SARA, SPCC, and SWPPP
  • Meet with management and department representatives to report on performance of the EMS and set environmental goals and objectives. Schedule and manage external surveillance and re-certification audits. Maintain and follow an environmental compliance calendar.
  • Conduct and document monthly stormwater inspections at all basin outfall locations to ensure regulatory compliance. Schedule and perform internal compliance audits.
  • Prepare and submit environmental reports for regulatory agencies and management in a timely manner. Represents PACCAR Engine Company in company negotiations with regulatory agencies including EPA, MDEQ, etc.
  • Schedule, profile, track and supervise waste disposal activities for compliance and maintenance of zero waste to landfill status
  • Maintain MSDS approvals
  • Manage SDS reviews and approvals and maintain the SDS database. Maintain monthly plant wide chemical usage and emissions database as pertains to compliance plans
  • Conduct annual and new hire environmental compliance training
  • Oversee third party contractors and consultants as relations to environmental and safety compliance activities
  • Support design for safety and safety improvements to equipment and processes
  • Track greenhouse gas (GHG) changes. Prepare and report GHG estimates
  • Support ergonomic evaluations and improvements according to NIOSH standards
  • Other responsibilities as needed based on safety, environmental or ergonomic initiatives
  • Providing backup support for Safety
  • Prepare waste manifests, other shipping records, and supporting documentation. Track waste-to-landfill data, and act on opportunities to minimize waste generation and landfilling of wastes.

Physical Requirements:

  • Lift, carry, push, pull 50 pounds or more.
  • Stand and walk eight hours.
  • Kneel, crawl and bend eight hours.
  • Do repeated bending and squatting
  • Work at or above shoulder level.
  • Have good manual dexterity.
  • Climb ladders to 12 feet heights.
  • Work around machinery with moving parts and cutting parts.
  • Have maximum use of both legs and arms.
  • Operate a motor vehicle.
  • Operate elevating equipment.
  • Be exposed to dust with proper protective equipment.
  • Be exposed to solvents with proper protective equipment.
  • Be exposed to weather extremes.
  • Tolerate continuous use of safety glasses, hearing protection, and steel-toed shoes.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Biological Engineering required. M.S. Degree preferred.
  • 3-5 years Environmental engineering experience required.
  • 1-2 years Industrial Safety and Health experience preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required.
