The City of Columbus has a current job opening and is accepting applications for the position of full-time Parks Maintenance Worker.

This is responsible technical work receiving and dispatching both emergency and non-emergency service calls in a public safety dispatch center who provides service to multiple agencies and jurisdictions. A critical requirement of this class is receiving calls for emergency service and dispatching emergency service units on a regular basis. Work involves operating an emergency service console receiving and dispatching calls for emergency services including police, fire, and medical services.

An employee is also responsible for monitoring a variety of emergency broadcast and information services. Work is performed under general supervision from the Lead Communications Specialist. The employee exercises some independent judgment in dispatching appropriate units to the scene. This will be for day and night positions, will work every other weekend and some holidays.

Key Responsibilities

• Monitors and responds to broadcasts on multiple radio frequencies; receives requests for police, fire, and other emergency services; obtains information regarding the emergency or non-emergency situation; dispatches appropriate Law Enforcement/Fire/EMS personnel to scene according to standard operating procedures.
• Enters required data into computer so as to track time, location, and nature of each dispatch; maintains status monitor as to units in an out of service; conducts radio checks.
• Receives requests for information from officers in the field and other authorized persons; utilizes computer terminal, phone, radio, or other sources to access and retrieve information; transmits information by radio and phone.
• Enters and retrieves reports in national and state computer system; logs and files incidents reports and other records; takes reports of accidents and related events; responds to public inquiries by phone, researches and provides requested information, reports and records in accordance with policies and procedures.

Qualifications

• Must be able to pass a typing test at 35wpm.
• Must be able to possess and maintain a State of Nebraska certificate as a NCIC Terminal Operator Prior office supervisory or management skills and experience is required.
• Considerable knowledge of the street system, geography, and population demographics of city; types, staffing requirements, and uses of firefighting apparatus and police units; operation of communications and emergency service equipment.
• Ability to think and act quickly and calmly in emergency situations; to obtain accurate and complete information from callers in emergency situations; to speak clearly and concisely, in a well-modulated voice and to use good diction; to function accurately while working under considerable stress.
• Hourly Rate Range is $22.43 - $31.02
